Hi guys, happy new year, & when your headache has cleared I would welcome some advice. I live in S/W France, local motoring is conducted at less than 50mph (80kph),. I have a 300tdi classic 4hp22 auto box. Top gear lockup is at 85kph so most of the time is in 3rd gear. Now for the tech bit, can I put a 4hp22 box from a 3.9 v8 in my classic as I think lockup is around 45mph (70kph), & can I fit the larger TC at the same time? I can't remember if the starter motor is on the same side as the 300 tdi, any other bits I might need?
My box has done 95000km, mostly pulling a mobile machine shop up mountains & although it works fine when hot, takes 2km to change out of 1st gear when cold & slips out of gear on the overrun at 20kph so it's time for a change.
Any advice from the experts on here would be appreciated.

Thanks, are all the gear change speeds different, or just the lockup speed. The lockup speed is what I want to get down to around 45mph.:brick:

Right, Heres my two pence
I had a Mazda Bongo, Lock up was around 55MPH, I found a variable resistor on top of the auto gearbox, I turned it back, lockup was then around 42 - 45 mph
Not having had a landy auto I don't know if there would be a something similar

Now that sounds like a good option. I just have to decide whether to do it myself If I can find a good 2nd hand box or get Ashcroft to build me one, Cheers.

Update,, just got an answer from Dave Ashcroft who will build me a box using the V8 valve block and governor with a HD T/convertor, fitted for a very reasonable price. So sometime in the spring, when I'm back in the UK I'll get it fitted.

I know that these 'boxes can be adjusted for a different LU road-speed, mate of mine had his RRC adjusted from 50 to 45mph. Early 'classics' locked up at 40mph, mine does - very handy for rural driving!
