When were plastic head dowels changed from plastic to metal?

As above? Was it's when they changed the engine, so would a 2002 EU3 for instance have metal dowels, or did they just one day change from plastic to metal?

I can't seem to find any answer when they were changed.

They started changing from nylon to steel in EU2 spec engines around 2000 once it became apparent that the nylon ones were allowing head slippage. However some engines were manufactured well before they got put into vehicles so the age of the vehicle is no reliable guide.
I'm pretty sure that any EU3 spec engine would have been fitted with steel locating dowels.

also engines that have had the uprated head gasket kit fitted will have steel dowels

Ok thanks for the info, I have noticed a very small amount of coolant loss over a fairly large mileage, so instantly though head problems could be on the way, need to jaw a look for leaks etc first. As mine is an EU3, I'm hoping it has the steel dowels so might not be the common slippage problem. I need to investigate further. Thanks for the information.
