what are the smallest wheels and tyres for a 1998 diesel freelander, just mauled my nuts off takeing a wheel off to do a track rod end am nakered, would a 15 in alloy fit as i need new tyres anyway and mine are 17in 225/55/17, thanks

Don't understand why you would want to?

like i said, to heavy for me to lift on and off, im 64 years old and do most myself but mauling big wheels is hard work, now i can handle 15in ok

195/80r15 is I believe the smallest standard size, came on steels or alloys in 15"

thanks, will 15 in alloy wheels fit that are multi holes, my son has a set on a ford and says will fit any,if not i suppose have to look on ebay

No you need early freelander wheels and to be honest why would you change from 17" to 15" they will probably be the same weight ?

well i can handle the ford 15in wheels ok, my mx5 wheels ok but thease 17in are masive to me,they have got to be lighter

I think you'll be suprised how little weight difference there is between a 17" & 15" alloy with tyres fitted.

Regardless of rim size, either 15" 16" or 17" need the same (almost) circumference. I'd assume that the steel rims would be marginally heavier than alloy.

Finally for all this buggeration of buying new wheels & tyres I'd be asking myself how often I actually lug the buggers about, if its a weekly thing then I guess I'd be able to justify the change but if this is something once in a blue moon I'd just stick with what I've got.

Finally I doubt that the Ford alloys would fit your freebie, I could be mistaken but I'd be very suprised if they went on without screwing something up if they physically fit at all!

do not for get that the 15 in wheels that your should have had on the tyres will be hevier as on the 17 in wheels they are a low profile and I know how you fell I am also nearly 63 next month with a bad back and it aint easy except when I get the son-inlaw around then its simples

son helps sometimes, but can get cheap 15in tyres, not so 17in, will have to go scrapyard and have a look, if no different i wont bother

I understand where you're coming from birdman.

But it will be a waste of time. Too much trouble and expense for very little (if any) gain.

15" wheels may well be fractionally lighter, but the tyres will be a whole lot heavier. Your 17" are 55 profile and the 15" will have to be 80 profile to keep the overall diameter correct.

So you'll just have the same weight or even more!!!!!

I also drive a medium size truck and just get the breakdown service boys to change a puncture.

Also from a performance point of view I wouldn't dream of spoiling my Freelanders roadholding capability.

the rolling radius of the 15" is the same as the 16", in order to acheive this the profile has to be larger.

so as the wheel gets bigger the tyre gets smaller, the 15in multifit alloys on my ford have lot smaller tyres, i think something like 55 the middle no.will have a look,

the side wall of the tyre gets smaller, yes.

so why can u not put on 205/55/15 wheels and tyres if they bolt on,

who says you can't?

they'll fit but your speedo/gearing will be different to standard size tyres.







and it'll be even lower to the ground

thats good, can always try a set on, some of the other makes look a lot smaller wheels

In the UK you can fit any size of wheel and tyre you fancy - no matter what effect it will have - unlike in other European countries.

If you were to fit as you suggest 205/55 15 tyres and wheels your speedo will say 70mph but you actually be doing only 62mph.

So your mpg will go down, but you will not realise that, as your speedo will be recording more miles than you are actually travelling.

I don't think that's good at all - but if it makes you happy - why not.
