Well I have decided I need new tyres and have also considered new wheels (like the look of steels lol)

I have been trying to find bf Goodrich at's in 255/65/16 but apparently they seems to have stopped making these? Am I along the right lines or is there a decent wheel and tyre and combo I have not considered?

you can find 235/70/16 BFGs and that's also std dimension for the D2

TBH I find it very difficult to advise on tyres, beyond quoting the manufacturer's recommendations, much as @sierrafery has already done. It becomes even more difficult if the user is trying to use "non standard" sized wheel rims.
So much will depend upon what the owner intends to do with the vehicle, for example if they intend a bit of "off-roading", how much, 10/90%, 20/80%, 50/50%? or just two wheels up on the kerb in Tesco's car park. The answer can make a big difference to the choices available. When it comes to road driving, how much of it will be at higher speeds, such as on a motorway?
Another question might be "Is the user prepared to use remoulds or only new tyres?"
Then there's that perenial question of how much to spend and even the user's own preferences and dislikes to take into account.
Is the user prepared to purchase tyres online and have them fitted at a local garage, or deal completely with a "High Street" tyre fitter such as Kwik Fit?
So many questions, each affecting the choice of tyres available.
For that reason, many people will go no further than quoting "The round black rubber ones are best".

@Needalandy ,

That info is out of the owners manual on the D2. There is a section in the defenders owners manual which gives Fender relevant info.
If you have not got a manual, then have a search for the Rave download, which also includes the owners manual.

Cheers

We've been using Nexen Roadian A/T 255/65R16 for some years, and have found them to be an excellent all-round tyre.

On the laning we did at LZ12 this year we only got stuck once in deep ruts when the Discovery bellied out, otherwise we did the whole course with four people in the car, no body lift, no suspension mods.

Goodrich do an Urban A/T tyre, but with the D2 traction control it does get by without extreme tyres.

I just fitted a set of Event AT 235/70 x 16 on my 300TDi and they are really excellent for the price. On the road they are not excessively noisy and when marshalling in the Thetford Forest area recently they went through a lot of deep mud with no issues at all. They have al balanced up with no steering shake at any speed up to the 85 mph I've driven them at.
For around £250 fitted for four a real bargain IMHO.
