wheel spacers

Just wondering,
If I was too fit freestyle alloys to my 1986 (90)would I get away with fitting a 5mm spacer?

more like 30mm spacers and a possibility of fettling the inside of the wheel. Of course that is assuming the axles are origonals

Everyone I spoke to when I was considering doing the same advised me against putting spacers on as they put extra strain on the wheel bearings.
