Wheel nut issue

Hi everybody, this is our first post so pls be gentle!

my son got his first Landy about 2 weeks ago. It’s a long term project for him so I’m guessing we will be on here a lot! One issue we are having is the wheel nuts on the off side front keep coming loose, literally to the point where we lost one in the field. I’ve never had this issue befor so wondering if it’s something to do with the nuts not being right for the wheels etc? I have uploaded some pics just so u know what wheels they are. Any help or advise is much appreciated!

Sounds like you and your boy are having fun.

When you get to a place you can post your pics, then find the vehicle specific section and make a post in there or if you are going to do a project of it you could make a post in that section.

Apologies,

it’s a 1990 defender 200tdi pickup. I believe it had the boost alloys on with spacers obviously.

Have you tried swapping them with the N/S front and see if the problem moves to that side?

Not yet as the locking nut key seems to have gone walkies also. Just waiting for a new one to arrive, as soon as it does we will give it a try.

I see it as an investment! 4 years till he can drive so that’s about how long it will take for us to make it spot on and he learns how to not be a useless adult that is scared of a bit of oil! Plus I get to play with it

Check the wheel is flat to the mating surface and doesn't wobble when jacked up. How many miles does it take for the nuts to become lose? Do they have enough thread to grip?

^ this. Also worth checking they’re alloy wheel nuts. I’d sell the boosts, get rid of the horrible spacers which I’ve never trusted and put steels on if it were me. You get a couple hundred for the project then and have what should be on an old 200tdi pickup. That’s my opinion though

So it does VERY few miles as it is mostly used on the field but I think it may be fixed. Swapped out the locking wheelnut, mostly because the old one actually came off whilst driving and is now somewhere in a 4 acre field of long grass, call me wasteful but I was not going looking for it! Anyway, loosened them all off and re aligned the wheel whilst it was jacked up and tightened them all. Touch wood it seems to be ok.
Only thing I can think is when we first drove it back over the mountain and noticed they were all loose, I called the guy we had just purchased it off and got him to come tighten them back up as there was no wrench in the car. Obviously they were tightened whilst still under full load, so I’m guessing the wheel was slightly out of alignment and therefore worded the nuts loose when driven..... pretty much the only logic I have on the subject .
Thank you to everybody for your replies and fear not I have a full list of jobs to do that I will be shamelessly picking your brains on. On the up side my boy loves his landy and last night mastered his first hill start on a damp grassy field . Just got to talk him out of wanting to get it sprayed orange now!!

Totally agree with you on the wheel and spacer front but unfortunately it’s not my vehicle, sometimes you have to leave the young ones to make their pants decisions and hopefully learn from them later on!

Some wheel spacers are dangerous. They're not type approved anorl. They can limit the amount of thread nuts have to hold on to. Yer kid may not know to check this. Its also an insurance mod so the insurance will need to be told.

If all the wheels were lose then that would make me think he forgot to tighten the nuts up after swapping the wheels from another vehicle.

I do know he had very recently swapped the wheels over as he had started to do little jobs on it, so I’m guessing as you said he had not tightened them properly first time as he also never drove it.

there is plenty of thread for the nuts but I will definitely check out the spacers on the safety front.

If I want to ask about something else, do I start a totally new thread of chuck it up here? Sorry, still new the the forum world!

Think it was @Pikey on ere who holds the record for wheels being loose. His front wheel came oft when cornering. The nuts were on the dash. He only put one on finger tight if i remember correctly.
