I’m looking for (ideally) folding wheel chocks which I can use whilst winching. Can anyone suggest where I can find a set, otherwise I may have to make them which I haven't really got the time for.

Cheers all.

Get some from halfrauds or off eBay. If you got a disco you get one in the engine bay. Or carry 2 bricks. Many simple solutions.

Halfords? I’d have to be desperate to look in there. I’m after something robust, that digs in rather than slides along and folds down for storage.

I had some from an Army Supplies depot ... 'very' robust (read that as feckin' huge and monstrously heavy) and not especially good for a Landrover. Much better to use a tree and spare strop to anchor against .. :) They lasted one winch pull before I gave them away!

You could make some?

Few lumps of 5mm plate, some 10mm bar for the hinge and some washers to weld on the ends to cap them, some M12 nuts for hinges and buzz it all together.

There are a number of ways you can fabricate the means of making them dig in to the surface or even have holes for them to be pegged into the ground.

Heheheh, the Army stores things were like that but a tad bigger and with theeth on the baseplate, large enough to shred tyres if placed the wrong way up!!

I only ever tried them at home, I do with any new kit I put in, and just getting them in and out of the landrover was so awkward I really doubted I'd ever use 'em, 'specially not in a hurry!! I'd guess they were 8mm plate, with sides, teeth on the bottom ground base, with smaller teeth on the tyre chock side and about 18" square each side!

One of those "It was a warm afternoon. they looked meaty and it seemed like a good idea" things ... Cost a tenner, gave 'em away but got the tenner back when the woman I gave them to sold them for £25 at a boot sale within minutes of opening, apparently!! ;)

You looking for something like this then?

Just remember to tie them down in the back of your motor if you get some.

Cheers

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’m not keen on plastic ones, would be a bit worried about them in the depths of Winter. I had seen some folding ally ones but can’t find a pic now. A lot of the good 4x4 stuff seems to be in the USA but not over here :(
I could make the ally ones but the cost of matls alone makes this non-sensical. I’ll keep on looking.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The winching will be mainly used for recovering tree trunks for logging. I’ll make do with some large split logs for now.

As I said earlier "Much better to use a tree and spare strop to anchor against .. :)" Generally quicker, generally more successful too, especially in a wood covered in leafmould and tractor ruts .. )

Couldn’t agree more. Short strop for anchoring to a tree, or another vehicle.

Or a robust anchor!
