Wheel alignment Problem

Hi Guys...I noticed when driving I've had to keep a small amount of right hand weight on the steering wheel otherwise my Disco veers off to the left. Also there's more road noise when driving straight, if the road bends round to the left the road noise disappears. I've had it to the same place twice for tracking and they maintain the tracking is 100%, but I still think something's not right.

Anyone recognise the symptoms or got a suggestion of what could be wrong?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom, this is how I would approach the situation:

1. Check all tyre pressures and set them to 32 front and 36 rear;

2. Jack up each front wheel in turn and check for play in the wheel bearing and swivel ball joints;

3. Whilst the wheels are up in the air, check for any brake dragging;

4. Check for any wear throughout the steering system - track rods ends, drag link ends etc etc.

After checking all of Dave's suggestions, the next and more in depth investigations will need to look for wear, damage or mis-alignment to the front and rear axle mountings and suspension.

Park the vehicle on flat level ground and the steering in the central position. Get a tape measure and check the distance between the centres of the front and rear wheels on each side; it won't be an accurate measurement, but if it's wildly out of alignment it should show up.

The next step if that looks OK I would suggest might be a full chassis alignment check.

could be lhs wheel bearing if noise disappears on left hand bends ,steering box centrality should be checked this is different to tracking ,theres a notch and hole on underside of steering box and rear of drop arm when aligned and pin inserted fully (drill bit) steering wheel should also be in the center position ,if not adjust or at least mark so that when you go for test drive you know if road wheels center position matches steering box (looking at road wheels when stood to see if they are central isnt enough)if it does then road wheels and box are both correct and centered if not adjust drag link to suit ,it can help to hold on to track rod whist some rocks steering wheel ,you can feel play in the system then
