Hi, I am a newbie. I have some strange things going on with my alternator and hope someone might be able to help?

A little while ago my my rev counter started playing up and then shortly afterwards stopped altogether, and my battery started draining so suspected the alternator was packing up. Voltage across the battery whilst the engine was running was reading 12.4v so assumed the alternator was definitely at fault. Fitted a new alternator and did not get the miraculous solution I was hoping for, the new alternator only seemed to jump into action if I revved the engine to over 2000rpm after startup, but once working it would remain on the go until the end of my journey. I could probably live with this but it has only lasted 10 days and has stopped working today.

I have also cleaned all the large earths within the engine compartment and all the alterntor connections.

Has anyone got any ideas?
 
my alternator packed up on my 200shape v8 , replaced it with a referb one , still same problem so changed the battery, then still not charging battery, the new alternator was faulty so had a new one sent and worked fine for me , dont assume that its not the alternator thats faulty again, if you could borrow one you know works to eliminate the alternator ?

Yes the belt is tight, it does squeal a bit when idling but that's all.

Actually the alternator was making a faint high pitched squeal of its own a couple of days ago. The engine was off, and key wasn't even in the ignition. I could only hear it when I was leaning in under the hood to examine the alternator but it still seemed quite strange
 
Sounds like the alternator was working as a motor?? If it was making noise when off!

I had a Brit part one do the same it was brand new and it hummed when off and drained my battery flat it took a few days to understand what was going wrong.

See if you can get it tested or something
