What's more likely, clutch plate or master cylinder?

My clutch is slipping and I have the gears grind when going into first from a stand still. Have been advised that it's more likely to be the master cylinder at fault but before I go ahead and start spending money I'd like a second opinion.

those 2 symptoms together suggest clutch cover and plate

If it were just grinding when sellecting first or reverse I would suspect master or slave cylinger seals but slipping clutch suggests its the clutch plate and maybe clutch cover springs and bearing are cause of grinding, you would change all three as a matter of course once gearbox out.

when a cluttch reaches the end of its life and start slipping, wear in cover spring and plate means theres too much travel needed for clutch to clear fully and so doesnt
