Getting ready to service my 97 discovery 300 tdi but im getting mixed messages as to what a garage would include in a full service ? so over to you guys for your valued opinions ,thanks Ady

Paul ,as it happens iv just bought a new haynes manuel this afternoon and im just about to take the wrapper off it ,will get my glasses out me thinks !

Yeah its not as simple as "interim" or "full". There's stuff to be done at 6000 miles/6 months, 12000 miles/12 months, 24000 miles/2 years, 2 years whatever the mileage, 36000 miles/3 years, 48000 miles/4 years, 96000 miles, and 10 years. So if its everything, its a lot, if its 12k miles its not too much.

Now just stop a minute and think. What do you think a garage would include in a full service? Oil and oil filter change if yer lucky and charge you a lot for the privelege.

Well when i was based in Germany a full service got you a shower with blowjob, full sex, shower afterwards being washed down by the girl, 4 steins and a meal, but that was in 1994 things may have changed now.

Where were you. I was in Berlin in 80,s before the wall came down. Went down to Saltaue an Sennilager ( spelling bit dodgy tho )

Muddy ,er i was refering to the Landrover !! but then again your idea of a full service does sound more apealing but not quite sure the garages up here offer that type of service ,and the police here at moment are having a great time raiding ,lets say late night establishments ! but il keep it in mind next time i walk in a garage reception area if theres a nice girl in the office ,also notice your in chesterfield i used to go through there every week on my way to Blidworth ,just passed mansfield . great drive from Manchester must say ,broke down once in Stoney middleton ? think thats how you spell it ? must be 20 years ago but good times ,Ady

A full service by the likes of kwik**** is an oil and filter, i come across this problem all the time at my garage, customer phones up how much for a full service on blah blah £300 i say thats expensive kwick**** down the road are advertising full service for £89. Ok i say this is what we do (give them a list of what we do) tell them to get a list of what they do for £89 then ask the how much to do our list. They always come back.
(now thats a full service to be proud of muddy)

Yeah stoney isnt too far away from where i dwell, and i knew what you meant pal about full service i just thought id add a little humour to the thread buddy.:D

Like it's been said, it can be anything from an oil n filter change to anything.

Personally if a garage was advertising a full service i'd expect them to replace all oils ( engine & diffs ) and at least check gearbox oil and top up ( good to check for bits in the oil ).

Full flush of cooling system and refill, all filters, fuel, air & oil as well as glow plug inspection and replace if needed, all steering, brake and clutch liquid level checks,a gain top up if needed.

Overall though i'd expect the garage to give me a receipt with a decent detail of work carried out, ie not just charge and hand the keys over, offer the replaced parts to you as well for your own inspection if you wish too and be served by the mechanic who did the work.

Worked for Harley D for years running the service department and i got the technician to always be present when services or any work was done to a customers bike and they were collecting and paying.

Ever considered doing the work yourself? It's not difficult and set aside a day to do it, you may find you'll enjoy it ;)

A "full" service depends on the mileage the car has done - for example a 60K service aint the same as a 6K one. Check the handbook or rave to find out what your motor needs at its mileage. then ask each garage what they do for the money?

Yes but that all depends on weather or not it has been serviced propperly in the first place.
