What's better V8 or Turbo diesels

I'd say their pretty equal. I love the diesels for their reliability and 'toughness' though you cant beat a V8 for sound and power. Having said that, diesel tuning has come a long way in the last year or two. You can make a tdi as powerful as the v8s now, though you will have to spend alot of cash and it will cause alot more engine wear.
 
Yeah with the larger intercoolers and pump tweaks, hate it when u see people who just play with the pump and don't replace the intercooler is kinda pointless all comes out of exhaust as black dust
 
Lol yeah, its a shame that the big intecoolers or the duel core ones are so expensive. But as time goes on they will go down i suppose. They're pretty new to the defender world. Same goes with the fancy reservoir shock absorbers, they werent around for the UK market that long ago but we see them more and more now and they are starting to go down in price too.
 
hi there, yes the diesel's are great for everything, and yes you can spend loads of money on intercoolers,and intake pipes witch make them better, and they do,iv driven a 300tdi 90 with tweaked pump,oversized intercooler,and intake pipes,the works,yea it was quick,but a v8 sounds nice,does have power on damand, and u have the option to drive like a cock if u want! :D but i cant see the point in throwing all that money at a 300 or a 200 tdi,when u could have a v8 for basicly the same price and less hassel! if i could run my rrc i would,but i cant so if u got the option to run a v8,do coz u b able to for long mate! :)
 
It all depends what you want it for, I have a fast car and a loud car but that is not what I wanted from my Defender so a V8 was not the way to go. I wanted a reliable hardy 4x4 that wasn't too expensive to run so a Diesel ticked the boxes. What's best depends on so many variables it would require an extensive explanation of why that choice was best for you. For a broader answer I would suggest you see what there is more of on the road as that generally shows what the demand is for and that is arguably the best.
 
I have a v8 just to **** green peace off I use it to drive round like a normal car barely sees greenlanes ATM so :)
 
I've owned both V8's (3.5, 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6) and derv burners (TD, 200tdi and 300tdi).

Current Landy is a 300tdi Disco. It's good. Cheaper to run, more rugged, powerful enough for what I want and fairly easy to work on.

BUT....

I miss my V8 RRC. That first time you start it in the morning... Puts a smile on your face everytime.
 
I've had a 2.25, 3.5 V8, 300tdi and a TD5 and the one that was most fun to drive and that I have regretted getting rid of ever since was the V8.

The simple reason for getting shot of it was purely that I couldn't afford to run it.:(

The standard Defender V8 can be a little lacklustre, but with very little fiddling, you can get lot more performance for very little cost. I have a ex RRC 3.9 in mine converted to twin SU's, with high compression heads, performance cam and sports exhaust and K&N cones. Bottom end power & torque is not much better than stock, but there is a lot more grunt in the mid range & top end.

mine would wheel spin through first second and third.;):eek:
 
std defender v8 is low compression and is disappointing ,i allways fit h/c pistons and swap needles in carb when i rebuild them
