Got a disco 1 you can have for that money, even throw in a snorkel if you want to play off road

But on a serious note a disco 1 or a Series III if you can. Simple to fix (which is bloody important), loads of spares out there and at £1k you won't cry too much when you inevitably smack it into a tree or drown the bugger in deep water. If you got a 90 for that money the chances are you would have to shovel it up and bring it home in bags.

Drive a cpl of em surprisingly solid but my god steering is bloody heavy

been looking around and i really want a s3 so looks like ive got a bit of saving to do

I can get my series 3 anywhere a disco can go. The rougher the better. £1000 upwards but £2000 and you start getting something solid. Parts are cheap and insurance from £90 a year, although fuel economy is not great 18mpg for petrol and 22 for diesel (diesels are very slow but run great in big puddles ).

As above go for a series as they are simple to maintain.
