What's a Kingpin?

Hi All,

Had my 110 200TDI serviced a few weeks back and the "independant Land Rover Specialist!" said the right wheel had a little play in it and the "Kingpin" needed replacing. He suggested 3 hours to do it and +£150 to sort!

Firstly, what's a kingpin?
Secondly, does +£150 sound right to sort?
Thirdly, does anyone know of a good Landy mechanic in West Yorkshire (Huddersfield) or Manchester, prepared to travel if good and reasonably priced.

i would say he means the swivel pin.

An amatuer can do it in 3 hours and parts will cost around £20.

I dont mean to hijack the thread, but a few years ago I had to remove the swivel pins on my s3 and they were a ba***rd end of! They took me about 4 hours of graft to remove. Is there any reason for this, or a specific way it should be done??

I'd take it to somebody who at least knows that your Land-Rover does not have Kingpins. It has something similar but they are called swivel pins. The hub carriers are connected to the axle via the swivel pins, and they are the pivots which allow the steering to turn from side to side. Kingpins are only fitted to front axles which are not driven. On 4x4s the Kingpin is effectively in 2 halves - the upper and lower swivel pins, and the UJ or CV joint is inbetween.

dont forget your need a spring balencer or preload checker!! dont just guess it or your steering could end up to stiff.

might be too late but i always take mine to the land rover centre in huddersfield for any major work.
they charge 40 /hr labour but they dont faff about, and they normally give it a good going over. i have no complaints about them.

Kingpins are on HGV's not landys,
im not sure what huddersfiels landrover are like for repairs, but avoid at all cost if buying a new defender, the bodywork looks all nice and shiny but there packed full of filler and you dont want that

Brother had an old van that had kingpins buggers were always seizing up. Think it was an old commer but it was years ago so can't remember now,.

'pparently my mates LDV pilot has kingpins, and they are (again, apparently) known to fail if they are not greased well often!

land rover centre in lockwood, huddersfield? i know what you mean, all the cars they're selling are in a sorry state and really expensive. you'd be a fool to buy from there. i tried to sell them my defender, which is in a far better state then many of theirs. and they turned me down before i even told them how much i wanted!
