Hello people

I am looking into what tyres I will be taking to southern Africa with me

as It will be a fair amount of sand driving\gravel I am thinking of going with a AT

I am currently running on fairly new general grabber AT2 235/85 16 on steel rims. as I plan on talking out 2 spares It would be cheaper just to use these

anyone any advise\input on tyres

now then, try sa 4x4 community forum for some tips .

I would go along the lines that the BFG A/T would be the most puncture resistant tyre of all the A/T types and brands.
I have my BFG A/T on my vehicle (LC) for our trip down to Cape Town.
I have gone to the trouble and expense of a 6th new tyre and rim complete, should the need arise.
I have read many trip reports where vehicles with BFG A/T have left UK, and arrived in CPT without a single puncture.
Trouble is, BFG A/T is about the most expensive tyre (size pro rata) you can buy.
I must admit the General AT2 does look good.

I'm just reading all the old tyre posts, as I came into some dosh on the weekend (thanks Lewis), and am about to buy 6 wheels/tyres for the Expedition Landy.

I originally had AT2's, as I found a few credible sources that said they were better in mud/wet grass than the BFG's. I loved those tyres, and I did get through mud that stopped 90's with BFG's, although who's to say that wasn't luck/driving skill :D

I did get a puncture with the AT2's on a pay and play, but I can't find anyone else who has had puncture probs, so I think I will just get some more AT2's, but 235/85/16's unless anyone has a good argument for something else ??

Try andstay with a 750 r16 eqivalent eg 235/85 or 265/75 , from point of view of punctures is more a luck thing than anything else , I only had one punc with BFG MT , in more than 15 yrs , and that was a star picket going thru it on a bush road that had been recently graded, I doubt any tire made would survive that .
Stick with tubeless and get a "sticky string repair kit" you can plug most puncs without even demounting tyre, i.e. jack up remove object, plug and reinflate . You can get permanent repair when you get to major centre.
Pay partic attention to running at correct inflation pressures , as a lot of punc come from sidewall bagging .
Stay away from retreads , as heat experienced in certain locations can approach that the tyres were put together at , result delamination . HTSH:)

Err, are you sure !
I think the BFG A/T would be one of the top tyres for puncture resistance.
i have read many blogs regarding a drive to Cape Town, and back to Europe without a single puncture.
Sure, the right tyre pressures at the right times always helps.
I have new 265 x 70 x R17 BGF A/T and I will take a spare tyre, in addition to the rear door mounted full spare wheel.
17 inch don't quite grow on trees in Africa.
