hi,looking at 96(p plate),4.6 hse,170 000 miles,from description/pics,body looks ok ,interior looks ok+ decent history stamped at dealers ,any tips on what to look out for on potential probs,(only had classics before!)..i realise they can be a minefield but the lure of relitively cheap comfort and luxury is just too great. .lol..any tips and guide on price to pay really appreciated..cheers dave.

170 000 miles. That's a lot. It's not just the engine which might be getting tired but it's everything else on and in the car that has done those miles too. Be very wary but having said that it might go on flawlessly for a long time or it might give you troubles from day one. I really hope it's price reflects those kilometres and also the unkown future.
A decent chat with the servicing work shop might be a good idea and give you some clue as to whether it has been a trouble free car or otherwise.

Price is dependant on condition more than anything. Read up on EAS problems and visit the www.rswsolutions site.
Take it for a LONG test drive and thoroughly check EAS, HEVAC, possible over-heating, as well as all the things you`d check on other vehicles. Make sure it`s not had lots of recent owners.
May be cheap to buy, but running/repair costs can soon mount up.
Try to get someone (preferably cynical) to do an inspection with you.
Good luck.

Depends really, I have been trying to sell mine with 127K on the clock, new engine 20K ago, New tyres, full history and no faults for £2750 with no luck. People will pay over £1000 for a good engine, £300 for gearbox, £250 for leather interior from a breaker. Strange world but it boils down to what people want to pay.

Ironically, the reason you can buy a P38 cheap is because it's an expensive car. Most people who are selling them are simply cutting their losses.
To answer your question though - at 170,000 miles on the clock, you should probably be looking in the region of £500 - £1,500 and should probably budget the same amount annually if you want to keep a car that age in decent order.

Range Rover with a 4.6 engine and cheap don't go together. (even if it is cheap to buy, it aint gonna be cheap to run...its all relative)
What's is worth?...easy, market forces dictate that. If no one wants something it wont sell for much, if everyone is after one the price goes up.
Have a look in a recent copy of the Parkers guide for market price, have a look at mag and internet classifieds...then have a look on ebay, but remember to check the 'completed' listings for what similar has sold for NOT what people hope to sell them for!.... simples
