Hello,

Just putting it out there to what see knowledge i can gain and refresh on as i havn't had a disco for a few years and i'm thinking of getting another.

I'm looking for a vehicle to use on/off road and i feel that a disco is the cheaper option overall but just as capable as a defender.
Except for the rusting of the body mounts and rear floor panel what else should i consider.
I've had two 200tdi's in the past and was happy with the mechanics.

would a 200tdi be the way to go? if i can find one that's not being held together by pieces of rust ?

Hoping your advice will get me dancing to the disco beat as my p38 to likes too much time and attention (its a bit like the ex wife and just as expensive)...lol...

Thanks for reading.

I haven't been able to fault my d2 td5 use it on road and off standard except for insa rangers and it gets through most stuff I throw at it and once you out of the mud its really nice to drive I take mine to Cornwall all the time to go surfing only downside is the mpg lol.

A 1995/1996 or 1997 300tdi would be a good option. Generally look for one at about 150000 miles or less with its inner wings, sills and boot floor intact.
Plenty of mods to make it leaner and meaner. Expect at a guesstimate to pay £1000 for an average condition up towards £1500.

Vehicles with off road mods bump the price to nearer the two grand mark.

Defenders are probably better offroad, but it of course depends on the individual vehicle. Without doubt any disco 1 or 2 is much nicer on the road, where I suspect you will spend most of the time. Don't think that you'll be getting a trouble free ride because you're changing from a P38 though.

Whatever you get, chuck some all terrain tyres on, they're okay on the road and will cope with most things off.

I understand you've had 2 200TDi's before, but any one of these are ancient now really, which, if you're looking for reliability could be a problem. You may have to look a a fair few to find a decent one. Or look for a 300 or TD5, the prices of which are tumbling.

I'm not sure which of the discos have air suspension.
I don't want a car with air suspension, my p38 has put me off for life.

Iv'e had two discos in the past both 200 tdi's and both were very good vehicles, the only thing that let them down was the rust on the body mounts...well most other places really but the mechanics were good.

One was standard 200 tdi and the other had larger turbo better inter cooler and had loads of power off road, both were reliable.

The Discovery 2 TD5 has rear air suspension. But that is easily removed by changing the bags for HD springs.
The kit is about £80, hardly a deal breaker.

You haven't said what budget you have to play with, so it's a bit hard to give any meaningful advice.

5 seat d2's didn't have air suspension but as said earlier air sus can be moved easily enough at low cost :) a nice 300tdi or cheaper td5 would be my choice, 200tdi if i was doing offroad>onroad
