what would knock out both main beams?

dip is working, main beam is out.

I haven't had a chance to check if it is a fuse yet.

Some wiring was done by a landrover-ignorant garage, so they might have screwed up. (can't/don't want to take landy back there).

My guesses are:

• Short blowing one light, then the other goes because of over-voltage.
• Fuse blown because of short.
• incompatible bulbs (garage replaced one but not the other).

Any other suggestions?

dip and main have seperate fuses - probably just a fuse gone

i blew both me diped bulbs in me van by leaving em on whilstparked up for 25 mins.no airflow to cool em.

• Fuse blown because of short. most likely cause
• incompatible bulbs (garage replaced one but not the other). unlikely - wouldnt cause total loss

My wife noted that when she switched onto sidelights only, the interference on the radio increased dramatically.

I was under the impression that most wiring on the landy had out and return wires, rather than a return via the chassis. Is this so?

No. Most return via chassis.

Itll almost certainly be the relay. Does pull-to-flash work?

i have this problem but only with my left hand main beam. what could the cause be???

Could also be the column stalk has worn out.

or the fuse, as they have one fuse per side.

Yeah, it should be one fuse for each side.

The garage rewired it to pass through one fuse, which has burnt out. No big surprise there.

I put in a new (bigger) fuse.

Then checked the lights. The brand-new-installed by garage sidelight is out. Bulb ok. Fuse ok.

So I looked at the wiring, and found most of the old loom hanging loose in the engine bay, with unterminated ends.

Oh, and when they put some new wiring in, they didn't bother to transfer the radio suppression over.

I would say stuff it and fix it all myself, but frankly don't have the time to start tracing every damn wire. The landy is also due its mot, which it won't pass with a stuffed sidelight.

The garage incoherently awful tosspots. An insurance company 'approved repairer'. All they had to do was replace some wing panels, lights and front bumper. It took them over 4 weeks to do the job and cock it up. The cockups include breaking one door lock, which they deny is anything to do with them.

Our normal garage would have done the same job in about 4 days, including waiting 3 days for parts to be delivered.

Incoherent. If I actually typed my opinion of them it would be an incoherent jumble of swearing and insults.
