If we are talking just the boxy one, I'd say the Ninety/OneTen models (i.e. just pre Defender). Sliding windows, lifting door handles, removable door tops. Once it got a model name it went all poncy :)

If we are talking all Land Rover models, then Discovery 2 (since the boxy one was designed before it).

Basically, if it doesn't have a manually selected transfer box (and preferably diff lock) and beam axles, I don't think it's a "proper" Land Rover :D

But, like, that's just my opinion, man.

From D2 to D3 the amount of changes was huge, basically the D2 is almost pure LR despite the electronics. It is possibly the best handling beam axle off roader. But the basic layout is 1970 Range Rover. The engine is as well the last LR designed engine. No history with the 2.25 engines or the TDi range but it is still designed and built by them.

So in a way the D2 is the last "proper" new car from LR, but I still feel that 2007 Defenders are the last proper made.

The last proper landy is the one in front......holding you up!

It had selectable four wheel drive, steered like an ocean liner and shook like a ****ting dog at 40mph. It also had leaf springs and a split windscreen. It was a tool and not a toy or status symbol and had a black Land-Rover badge.
Series Land Rovers were the last proper Land Rovers

Nuff said. :)

for me its the TD5 , still has the shape, the vent flaps , the crap build quality , and does everything the rest do, also still sounds like a tractor

I once came across a chap in a 200 tdi 110, he had had the cam belt fail and bent most of the push rods. He was straightning the rods on a rock with a hammer and had a new belt to fit in his spares box.
so what you may say, well we were half way between Sidi Bel Abbes and Tamanrasset hundreds on miles from any garage, 45 deg heat, no shade and no water within walking distance. there isn't a LR after a non leccy 300 I would do the trip in.
On the new ones you need an internet connection to run full diagnostics !!!

Now that's a proper Landy! Did it work?

A true Landrover would be the one you would pick out of EVERY vehicle LR has made if you were to spend a year ferrying medical supplies around the African bush.

I love my D2 but with my hand on my heart I would have to pick 200 tdi Discovery for the above task.

The current Defender is still a " proper Landrover " and will only strengthen further the value of them once they cease production.

I think the D2 was the last vehicle LR made that is " genetically matched " to all that came before.

Meh.. peeps are just voting for their favourite LR.. last proper Landy was the Series 3.. proper British engineering and Birmabright panels.. after that they're paper-thin facsimiles..

i think that must have finished earlier later s3s at least were built of ****
Once again I've learned something from you James, I had assumed the changeover (imo a crucial/fundamental change but not many seem to care!) came about with the introduction of the Ninety/One Ten. Would be interesting to pinpoint the actual year, maybe via owners on here? I did write to James Taylor about it when he was at LRO (I think) but they didn't pick up on it.. LRO was so littered with incorrectly captioned photos and duff info I soon stopped buying it anyway though so maybe they've since covered it...?
