Alright all!!

Got me self a doner disco on Sunday.

H reg - 119,000 - 5 brand new all terrain tyres on aloys!

She is a minter for £500

Anyhow, I want some advise as to what to use off it for the defender.

Obviously the engine is comming out, but do I use the gearbox off it / the transfer box / the clutch????

The clutch in my defender is brand new, so would like to keep it. Will it bolt to the disco engine? Is the flywheel the same size on the disco engine?

Was told by someone to keep my old gearbox (probly cus its too heavy) and just replace the transferbox. What is the bonus to changing the transfer box? Is it geared differently? (feels it to drive!)

Thanks for any help!!

Ive just also been told (by someone trying to sell one to me!) that I need to replace the exhaust system when I fit this disco engine as mine is for a N/A and the diameter is different...

Anyone know if this is true??

Yup, you really need an exhaust bigger than 2 1/2" diameter. Steve Parker down pipe from the turbo is required as well - shouldn't be too expensive for a new system. Dont fit the centre box though, just have a straight through tube going to the back box. I would be tempted to "modify" the Disco exhaust and attach a few sections of flexipie to make sure it follows yer Landy contours properly (Demontweeks do 3" flexi).

I am also in the process of dismantling a 200tdi for my 110. The clutches for the 2.5TD and 200tdi are the same, so I think the 2.5NA will be the same.
I am also replacing the timing belt even though the one in the disco was only 5,000 miles old.
Already got the exhaust downpipe and 2 replacement engine mount rubbers.
This weeks job is to disconnect everything in the disco ready to pull the engine out.
Then I have a donor disco 1 if anyone wants any bits.

Thanks for the info on the clutch Pat!

Good luck with the ripout! If you discover any usefull advise along the way please let me know! As I havnt really got a clue what im doing!

Are you planning to swap the transferbox? My understanding is that the disco transbox has a higher gear ratio making it better on the road/motorway.

when this is done could someone please post a definitive guide, with pictures if possible, on how to make these fit? 'cos I have still been told hundreds of things about the engine being too far back, the bell housing from the disco bolting on to make it reach, etc. :) It would greatly help me when i want to TDi my 90 hopefully this summer.

Sure thing boydy! Not sure how definitive any guide from me will be, but will give it a go. In the meantime you mention that you have heard this and that about doing the job. Lets post what each of us have heard and see if we can get any answers before we start!

So far this is the info i have:-

My N/A has manual steering so i need to change over the powersteering from the disco! - apparently the pipes/brackets are not going to fit. Steve Parker do a kit for this which im told costs £25 approx

Pat tells me that the clutches are the same on the TD and the TDI so I would assum also the same on the N/A!

However Ive also heard that the bell housing from the disco is longer than the N/A, So im guessing that this need to be used otherwise there is gunna be somekind of gap!

We all know the special downpipe is required - again available from Steve Parker at a cost of £125 approx.

Also told that the pipes for the intercooler will not be long enough when its mounted in the defender. The kit for this again from Steve Parker is £142.50

When the intercooler is in. It will get in the way of the original Air filter box and the pipes are not right in some way. The Air filter kit is £235 which will then be mounted out the way where the water bottle is.

Then because I have an N/A the exhaust system is too narrow So I need a Turbo exhaust which again from Steve Parker is £125.

Steve Parker Land Rover Exhaust Systems, Stainless Steel Exhausts

Might sound like Im spamming on behalf of Steve Parker, but this is the only place I have priced this ****e up from. If anyone can advise of anywhere else that does these kits, that would be great!

Also if any of the above statements are bollox then any advice on that would be great too!!

DEFENDER 90/110 DISCOVERY ENGINE CONVERSION DOWN PIPE on eBay, also, Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 07-Jun-08 08:59:28 BST)

I found these.

And i was told that the disco bellhousing is longer, which will put the engine back in line, but i was then also told by someone else that it wn't bolt straight on to the LT77 gearbox. Don't know who to believe. If you were to do this though you would need to bolt the input shaft from the disco onto the def gearbox, as it wudn reach with the longer bellhousing. Due to this, it would suggest that the clutch is the same.

The x-fer boxes apparently are interchangeable, and the disco one has a higher geared high range.

As for power steering, personally, i would take the pump of the TDi and keep it manual - less problems then with leaks etc.

I also read somewhere that the standard TD air filter doesn't get too much in the way, and cn be kept? Don't know how true this is.

I guess also the intercooler pipes can be made by hand, which won't be as neat but will be a lot cheaper.

How does all this sound to all else on here?
