reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeight!

Im moving up from a 2.5 N/A to possibly a TD5! originally wanted a 300, but a TD5 has come up at the right price. I know what to look for re, X member, chassis blah blah blah but what i want to know is, what to look for on the engine. obviously smoke and turbo whine but is there anything else other than the norm? tell-tale stuff that a TD5 is worn? i dont want to buy a dog! its a T plate and done around 100k. dont know much else yet, hopefully know more Fri night, as it may allready be sold.

Cheers once again,

G

CharlesY and BushTwot are the Teedeefive eggsperts.

As far as I know, a batch of early TD5s had no threadlock on the oil pump bolt, leading to catastrophic failure. if it's done 100k and not failed, shirley it must be OK.
The other one is oil ingress into the injector harness leading to ecu problems.

Yeah, Treworgeys right.

Land Rover forgot to apply Loctite on the threads of the bolt that secures the oil pump in place. Over time it worked loose causing loss of oil pressure and engine failure.

Don't worry though, if it hasn't come of by now it won't as it's probably been sorted.

All I can say is to get in and give it a good testdrive, check the service history, cause if it's been done properly at 100k it shouldn't be worn out. Check for smoke when you plant your foot, and it should pull in 5th from 35mph upto 80+.

Wasn't there a problem with plastic rods holding the heads centred on the block on early TD5's? I believe that sometimes the rods could deform through the heat allowing the head to move....
