What to look for

Hello All,
I have been asked to look at a 2000 1.8EXI Freelander for my wife
I know about the head gasket problems but what else should I look for?

I have been told to go and see it on Tuesday

would be more inclined to go along the lines of: "I'm really happy you want a land rover, and understand your choice of a freelander. However, I really don't think a 1.8 petrol is the way to go, and would be happier if you had a td4"

Ah ...... but a td4 is about 4 times as much as this one, and from what I see on the forum they too have faults.

Leave it alone or if she must have it then get an independent warranty to help with the inevitable bills.

'tis true, the td4 is not without faults too. In LRO/LRM magazine a few months back, they had a buying guide for the freelander, listing some of the key areas. I'll see if I can dig it out.

One of the key things is all going to be HGF related. Check the colour of the coolant, check the condition of the oil, look under the filler cap for mayonnaise etc.

Other than that, be wary of seized vcu. hard to check easily. either get under it and draw a line with tippex from the rear prop , across the vcu and onto the front prop. Take it for a spin, with lots of full left and right lock, off road or gravel if you can, then get under it and see if the lines still line up. If so, could be a problem, if not, you're not out of the woods yet. Jack up one rear wheel only, with handbrake off. You should be able to just turn the wheel with a reasonable amount of force.

They used em in lotus's and caterhams. Fast but u gotta know what lotus stands for.

Sound familiar to buying a p38

This is a cheap Freelander so I can afford to do some work. I will check for the problems listed so far.

Cheap why? We have been looking around and the prices are dropping as there are so many unsold cars of all makes with cheap insurance and tax and better mpg

Those dealers that have 4x4's localy are very keen to off load them, Very few Landy's and most have been on display for a while. Local dealers have told me they don't want them at present as they started off loading after the fuel prices went up. Now the credit crunch has compunded the problem further.

Could be a good time to buy if the right one comes along.
