Finally the time has come to get rid of the old family car and to replace it with a Discovery.

I know I can fit in a 2002 Td5 ES as it had fully adjustable seats, (I need the seat as low as possible to get in being 6'7" with a long body) but would like to get one of the Tdi jobbies as these would appear much simpler beasts to look after and would appear to use slightly less fuel.

So my questions to you knowledgeable folk are;

Do all Tdi's have height adjustment on the seat and if not what models do?

If the two rear seats aren't fitted is it possible to fit them later on?

What are the pros and cons between the Tdi's, Td5s or even a P38 RR providing I would fit in it of course?

Where are all the Diesel Manual Discovery 1 & 2s in Norfolk? We ended up driving 200 miles to view one today in Peterborough and it was in such poor condition for the money it was a huge waste of time.

Is there anything else I need to look out for?

Many thanks for your help on this.

Oh if anyone knows of or has a good Discovery for sale in or around Norfolk for a good price and long MOT please let me know.

It's definitely worth checking you can fit in one.
Disco 1 - only ones with electric seats have height adjustment (those with actual head rests rather than the hoops). Although I would say they don't go particularly low regardless. Mine has electric seats, I'm a short arse (5'7"), have it slightly above minimum height and I have to peer down to see some traffic lights!
I seem to recall there is a modification you can make which allows the seat go go further back for taller drivers.

I believe you can easily retrofit the two sideways seats in the boot if they're not fitted, as long as you get the brackets with them.

The general consensus is that the TDI is a much simpler vehicle with less to go wrong. The TD5 is lovely and a more modern vehicle though.

Plenty of advice on what to look out for on here. Check for rust, rust and rust. Boot floor, rear arches, front inner wings, anywhere really!

I have both: a 97 300tdi ES and the seat only tilts backwards and forwards it does not seem to go up or down as such, im 6`1" and cant drive with the sun visor down as I cant see bugger all of the road then. My son is 6'4" and he can drive it ok.

The TD5 2004 has manual seats and I can see more of the road in that and its so much nicer to drive (both are autos)

I would say try driving both then decide
