Hi there i have read loads of threads about 200tdi in a series but cant find the answer im looking for.
sorry if the answer is somewhere!
So here goes.
i have recently done a 200di conversion in my series 3 using a range rover engine that had been sat for about 5 years and was rapped up in about 10 layers of cling film!
It has done about 70,000 miles ( a real bargain at £130)
i am very happy with the conversion and it has become a very reliable car. I have not yet used it on the road as it still needs a bit of work doing to get an mot.
I was just wondering if any of you had any opinions on what i should do as i still have the turbo in the back of the garage and also a set of discovery diffs, i was thinking to put the disco diffs in to gear it up as i dont have an overdrive but i have the big defender wheels and want to keep them so would it struggle without the turbo and if i do put the turbo on is all of this talk about breaking gearboxes and halfshafts really true?

thanks
ieuan

the 200Di will be happy geared up....though I'd be tempted to sell the axles and buy an o/d as it'll give you more flexability.
If you fit the turbo your box wont mind but halfshafts will

Half shafts and gear box will only break if you jolt the running gear some how. Like trying to wheel spin on tarmac :)

Mines a 200tdi with Range Rover diffs. It is brilliant. So much more useable on the road than before :D

DO IT!

You might find that if you keep the standard series diffs in it'll be too low geared and you can still blow a box or halfshaft on standard running gear.
I would put the diffs in and put the turbo on, if anythings gonna blow it will most likely be a halfshaft which are easy to fit and cheap, I used to carry spare ones with me and change them at the side of the road!
It all depends on how you drive it, if your gonna be racing saxo's at the lights expect things to go bang!

Put the turbo on, and the 3.54 diffs in , better mpg less noise etc etc .
Re breaking things, its more down to how you drive and how much you abuse the vehicle. I had a 109 with 3.8L leyland diesel in , it did tens of thousands of miles , only time it broke a half shaft was when I did a couple of hundred miles at a gtw of 6oookg , A mate who had a 2.25 109 was for ever putting in halfshafts and diffs , but he was totally deaf so could not hear what revs etc he was doing .
