the disco will not start at all now, the recovery fella said its cos my rad has a bit of mud still on it and thats made it overheat and the head gasket to blow ???

what other damage could have been done ???
Do i try and get this engine fixed or put a different one in ????

i dont want to give up on this disco as iv put £1400 into getin it,

THANKS stu

Personally I would take the head off and have a look for damage and also the sump and check the ends for damage also, but that may not be nesessary.
You could just skim the head and stick a gasket on it though and prob get away with it.
Best have a go and spend maybe 80 quid on it, you may save the cost of another engine.
Or, get someone who knows about disco engines to have a look and give advice, dont give up on it yet.:)

As far as I know the 300tdi bottom end is fairly solid, I'd go for a quick compression test and if it fails do a head recon. Cheap as chips and seems suprisingly easy (in the process of doing mine once I get hold of some new spring clips for the rocker!!)

Recovery guy might be right ... mine did similar, but I didn't let it go as far as blowing the head as I saw the gauge rising and stopped sharpish like ... in my case the rad had half it's fins missing at the back here they couldn't be seen. Doesn't help that the engine oil cooler is also in the same place ..

Sounds, however, that yours has taken the HG down with it, unfortunately.

Trouble is if you let a garage do it it's likely to cost £350 - £400 for the head work, then £1000 for a radiator if it's fins, hopefully it just needs cleaning ...

If you do the work yourself you can save costs, but frankly it depends if the engine oil boiled too and cooked big ends etc etc ... which only a strip-down can tell properly!

I'd suggest you at least take the head off and see what's what ... and take it from there.

Oh, and clean the mud from the rad carefully ... too much pressure and you'll really feck it up ...
