What to check on a 300TDi?

Hi all,
I'm off to look at a 300 TDi on Saturday. Is there anything I should particuarly check on one of these engines? The Defender 90 it's in has covered about 150k miles and has a hydraulic winch fitted.

just make sure the ash tray isn't full - everything else is easy to sort

This is an injun fred - if he is picking up the injun, why should he be mentioning a winch, and why would yu mention an ashtray?

Found a great post on buying a Defender. My question was about 300TDi engines so that's why I posted it here. Isn't the ashtray on these engines located under the big knob on the rocker cover?

I agree 100%

check for smoke on start up from cold, could suggest a dying turbo like mine did if theres a lot of it.

Then get it warm (assuming its still in the car) and take it for a spin up to speed, listen for rattles - the brake vacuum pumps on them fail, with a rattle often.

Umm... Oh yeah check for HGF too for they can overheat easily and warp the head.
