i'm just in the process of selling my jeep(yes i know is a swear word in here) i got fed up with the bloodly thing!!!!!
but now im looking to get a defender or a 90 but are not sure what difference there is.

But as im new to the landrover world what would the best model and engine size be for me (tdi or normal), i plan to do mods to it and go green laning but also to be used for work. im after a bullet proof landy !!!

Depends how much you want to spend!
Virtually no difference between the 90 and Defender - just a re-badge.
90's and early Defenders had a non-turbo engine and no Power Steering.
From 92 to 94 it was the 200TDi (my personal favorite) followed by the 300TDi (which the military still use, so it can't be bad). Later came the TD5, but I don't know much about them, other than they're more complicated and expensive to buy and maintain.
£4 - 5k will get you a decent 200TDi. 300s vary according to age and condition.

There's lots more info on here - try doing a search.

Defender Tdis from 1990 (The year after the introduction of the Discovery) - this was a cross-over year I believe so watch for TD's masquerading as Tdi's - Everything 1991 on will be a Tdi.

A Tdi is your best bet if you're fixin it yourself, like reasonable economy (bearing in mind its 2 tons, permanent 4WD and has the aerodynamics of a pair of mating housebricks) and a degree of performance that makes transit vans jealous.

TD5 is an expensive luxury, unless you really want a Defender you can chip to around 200bhp (pointless really), more expensive to fix than a Tdi and no real guarantee that they're any better.

There are some V8 defenders about - prices are about the same as Tdi models, thirsty unless it's LPG - mind you it's still as thirsty, just the fuel costs less - LPG conversion usually means less load bay space.

Buy an earlier version with a good chassis, bulkhead and running gear over a newer model with potential problem areas - if you're doing the servicing yourself, service it the day after you pick it up regardless of what the service record says and you'll save yerself a world of hurt in the future.

FWIW - you'll get a lot more Disco for your money than you will Defender. The only real reason to have a Defender over a Disco is if you really want one.

Cheers,
