What to Buy? Range Rover for Under £5000

Even a real doggy Defender is silly money.

Not really. Quite possible to buy a running Ninety or One Ten, or Tdi Defender, with a years ticket, for around the 5k mark.

The hype about Defender prices is not reflected in the experiences of those people I know who have actually sold them recently.
There is a demand, but it is steady, not bite your hand off.

Matter of opinion. I would consider it silly money for a Range Rover, as I have never had any desire to own one, except maybe one of the earliest classics.
I only actually paid £2700 for my Ninety, but that was ten years ago.

5K is actually not a bad deal for a Defender to use as a work vehicle, when you consider what a modern pick up or van sells for.

Mine was on an H plate. Bought it for a grand around 2000. It did need an outrigger welding though. And a new starter motor. That was a work vehicle though and it certainly took some abuse.
 
I have a 1989 110 with a Disco 300Tdi which will be on the market soon - just got to do the rear wheel bearings and speedo cable first - solid chassis, door bottoms a little scruffy, but the rest id solid and passed MOT in February! :D:D:D:D:D:D (Shameless plug in advance!!)

Note: Roof rack currently not fitted - won't fit in car parks! - but will be included in the sale - also wit ha set of window guard/grates/screens etc.

To me that is the point. A Range Rover is a nice comfortable vehicle , which you can quite happily use for long drives(so long as she doesn't break down) and then, if need be, use as a work vehicle. A Defender is a work vehicle, which cannot, in any circumstances, be called comfortable if wanting to do a journey of hundreds of miles.
I like Defenders and would have one, if I also got to have a Range Rover. However, if I had to choose a vehicle for work and the good parts of every day life, I would have to say Range Rover.

do you know if RR Classic Wheel bolt and hub fitment is the same for the Landy ? If so i have a set of compomotive 5 spoke alloys that are yours if you want them. i think painted gloss black on your landy would look good

Our other (previous) Defender 110 (it was a true Defender built in 1991) had P38 Leather seats and was actually reasonable comfortable...
I suppose part of my dislike of Defenders, for distance, is the fact I have a few aches and pains and being in the seating/driving position of a Defender, for more than 50 -100 miles, is a killer. I can't walk properly when I get out and take days to recover from the discomfort.
The Range Rover isn't perfect but miles better than the Defender, in that respect.

Couldn't agree more. I always used to avoid long journeys in my Ninety, I used to take my car.

When I was much younger, I used to do long drives for work in my Series, but it was fairly painful, and ended up knackering my back, so I gave it up.

Couldn't agree more, a S3 109 safari was my last one ... switched to RRC's seventeen years ago for the same reason. The only slight similarity with the series driving position is that when LR incorporated the door-pull & arm-rest in the RR I found that was always pressing against my right hip & I'm not a big bloke. My present '87 Vogue (built prior to that intrusion) will take me anywhere without any pain & I much prefer velour to leather.

The RR does the towing and 4 wheel stuff with comfort.
I have had three over the years. A two door with vinyl seats and droopy doors,a Vogue and the last a P38 which lasted me 10 years.

I want a diesel for reliability.

Looking at ebay there appear to be a lot of 322's being 'sold for a friend' or being in someone ownership for a short time. I get the impression a lot are bought at car auctions and then sold on.

The background in the pictures and text tell a lot about the vendor.
I hate the term fully loaded.

My other thought is to try a Volvo V90.

So is the 322 a real gamble?

Early Diesel L322's are a BIG gamble - gearbox issues prevalent....research!
