Ok, so as mine starts after 3 cranks but runs lumpy for about a minute and smokes, then clears and runs fine for the rest of the day could be a faulty glow plug?
Can I test them without taking them out?

Take them out, and connect accross battery to check - hold then in a pair of mole grips as it will get hot!
