Hi Guys, wondering if anyone can shed some light on these (2000) TD5 symptoms:

Starts up ok (mostly)
Blows white smoke (on start up only)
Zero throttle response for 10 seconds - then revs fine

Unfortunately another issue is the OBD2 port has connection failure so we can't run a diagnosis until this is fixed.

Cheers

Not fully OBD2 compatible.
Really you need a Nanacom or Foxwell with dedicated software to read live data.
Poor starting can be injector seals/washers, also check for oil in the red plug going into the ecu. If so then replace injector loom with a decent one.
Sorry, forgot to say welcome!

Hi Anaconda,

Thanks for the welcome message. As you noticed, i'm a newbie on the chat group. I live in Spain and after taking my car to 3 different mechanics - each one with very different diagnosis assessments, I fancied my chances with you guys :)

Thanks for the input. I have already replaced the injector loom and cleaned out the (very oily) ecu. I will replace the injector seals & washers too and see.

Thanks again for the info.

Cheers

Try a new MAF unit, when this fails you get exactly these symptoms.

When you start the engine the ECU looks for a signal from the MAF unit and if it doesn't get one it switches to default settings.

While this is happening the vehicle won't really accelerate, then after a short time the power comes back as the ECU applies default settings

Thanks Lightning,
I’ll give this a go. Would be a nice easy fix.
