L322 What sort of average mpg from a td6?

I've had my td6 L322 for a few weeks now and my average mpg seems to be pretty much stuck on 22.4.

If I reset and do a motorway journey I might get it up to 23 or possible 24 briefly, but it soon settles back down to 22ish

Is this about right? I think I was expecting slightly better.
Certainly lots of ads for these state you can get 30mpg on a long run. Well I've driven from Cornwall to Essex and never saw above 24.

You will find that the figures quoted are usually optimistic and the computer in the car is probably inaccurate. the only way to get a better figure is to fill up at a given pump and make a note of the litres till its full,use it till the red light comes on and go back to the same pump and fill till full note how much you have used and divide by miles

I get a combined 25 ish When towing its down to 20. On motorway taking it steady 70/75 I get around 27

Oh forgot to mention get it mapped, not a chip etc a remap. It's the best thing you can do to it. All round better motor.

I find the computer is a tad optimistic on my TD6.
Best I ever got was 30MPG actual figure on a long run. Computer was saying 32/33.
I usually get around 24MPG average, computer says 26/27.

Before I changed the fuel pump I got around 30mpg. I lost 10% after the pump change. Possibly coincidence, possibly not

I had a 2009 Beemer with the 200hp TD6, ok not even sure if it was the newer version (I believe BMW totally re-engineered the engine at some point), I digress, I rarely seen much over 40mpg in what was probably 400kg lighter than the rangie but the chap I sold it to did motorway miles and had many years on me....he got a stonking 60+ mpg out of it.
All it takes is a mentality rewire where you just tickle it along, coast more, use brakes less etc etc and you can sadden your life to the point your not enjoying driving and causing misery behind you

Talking of brakes, a slightly binding brake could give the deficit you are witnessing, after a decent run of 10 miles get out and feel for any undue heat from any of the wheels, a sticking caliper will have a wheel roasting when others are cool'ish.

On a run driving it like a vicar on cruise control I can get 27.9 which is fookin abysmal

check for obvious like dragging brakes or lack of oil in diffs etc.

It also depends what speed your are cruising at on a long run, I managed 23mpg out of my 4.2 S/C on the way back from Taunton at a steady 65-70mph. If you are howling along at 80+ it will be working hard to keep that speed up with the bulk of the vehicle. They do weigh around 2700kg. PO tells me 25mpg is possible if you are doing 60mph in the supercharged.

I also have an NP300 navara, 2.3 twin turbo diesel. If you crawl along at 55-60mph it will amazingly do 40mpg or more, bring that up to 65-70 and its down to 33-34mpg or so. Try and cruise at 75+ and its down into the late 20's. A difference of 12mpg which over the tank based on a 16 gallon usable capacity (it is larger) it makes a difference of nearly 200 miles in range! Point I'm making is large heavy stuff really really suffers if you try and push on with it at speed.

My p38 4.0 gets that kind of mpg on a run at 80mph
