Hi to all, just joined today after a friend who has a disco recemmended the site.. I've spent today viewing a few disco's and am basically wondering what exactly i need to watch out for with these motors.. I'm looking to buy as soon as possible and have been reading through some posts in here for a while trying to pick up on where they tend to go wrong! First one i looked at had vaseline around the inside of the sunroof, guessing it leaks, other than that is seemed not too bad.. Is the sunroof issue a deal breaker and what else should i check out, going back tomorrow...

Any help appreciated..

Hi, it would help people to help you if you tell us what year and model etc

If its the 300 check the boot floor, sills, inner wings etc for rot

also if the sunroof is leaking you can just get a new seal, check the back and alpine window rubbers as these can perish but again can be fixed

Good point :) I'm looking at a td5 between say 1998-2001..

That's brilliant cheers, will make a note of these pointers... :)

my advice is to go with an older 200tdi.....lovely motor.....remove unwanted accessories (gearbox, body, chassis etc) and replace with Series parts.......:D:D

Bit beyond my abilities sadly!!

So, viewed this today...

Used Land Rover Discovery 4x4 2.5 Td5 Xs 7 Seat 5dr | Davenport Motor Company Ltd

The sales guy has been using it to commute due to weather up here at the moment so it appears to work ok! Took it out for a drive and all seems fine.. only little niggling doubt i had was as we pulled away there was a slight grinding noise from underneath but the guy said he thought the worst too until he realised it was just snow in the arches? We were parked in nearly 2ft of snow and it didn't happen again but you know...
Checked underneath, no rot or rust and no tell tale oil leaks in the snow underneath engine bay.. unbelieveably neither sunroof appeared to be leaking.. the rear door hinge was fine.. no rust in arches and upholstery was fine too.. it has a service book and was last serviced 4000 miles ago but it was last year.. and no proof of timing belt/chain (not sure which?) being changed at any point.. what are intervals? it'd need two tyres soon and front discs had a bit of a lip but neither are deal breakers..

What to do then... Was expecting far worse and it felt great to drive..
