just re-post your mileage like everyone else does :)

mines just coming up to 115k, 30k since the MLS was done and still going great guns :D

2003 td4 with 206,000 miles, I've replaced 2 fuel pumps, the clutch at 180k and one driveshaft, other than that its been minor service items, still on the original vcu !.
I think these engines are good for very high mileage, not as confident about the drive train, but so far so good.

That is kind of amazing if the original VCU is still ok. Have you had it from new to confirm this? If you have, have you looked after the tyres and correct replacement policy? Have you done any of Hippo's VCU tests?

hello Spacemonkey, thats a fair question.

I bought the car at 4 years old with 36k on it, it was one owner and full Landrover history, with no record or sign that the vcu had been changed.
so i cant 100% vouch for the full mileage, but I've put 170k on it since.
i make sure that i rotate the tyres and only replace all four together.

I live in the west of Ireland and therefore most of my journeys are at 60mph in 5th, with very little town/city driving, I also have a rough gravel lane up to the house, so i engage the 4wd every day, i can only think that a combination of these two facts are the reason for the long life of the VCU.

I note the often quoted 70k lifespan, my own opinion is that this may be relevant and good advice for the UK, but could be a bit premature in other cases. Its a gamble based on vehicle age, annual mileage, value, access to a second car and the ability to do work myself when needed.

I've never done the VCU test, but i keep a keen watch on how the car drives.

Having said all the above, i kind of expect that i'll be starting a 'my VCU failed' thread in the next 12 months :)

All the best, and thanks to all for the excellent advice on here.

Hahah! Well, if you get a chance I for one would definitely be interested to see the results of the VCU tests on yours. Sounds like it is original too. Does it feel very tight when reversing at full lock very slowly?

Will do, I'll post the results on the 'sticky page', i've a feeling that i'm going to regret this and that its going to be expensive
