Does anybody know what this is, it is attached to the exhaust mainfold and to the carb. I have looked at plenty of other 5 main bearing engines and havent seen one at all. Do i really need it as i think it is affecting my engines performance.

im only pulling at straws here but i would guess its some some thing to do with the automatic choke if fitted, years ago automatic chokes worked off the temp of the engine this was controled by a small bore pipe from the cooling system, have you tried running the landy with out it,if in doubt email or phone the landrover orphanage they have a web site. Thanks mate will do that. Where abouts in the wet side of south wales are you ?

Never seen anything like it before, but looking at the parts book it's part of the European detox system. The Carb is different, and the manifold by the look of it, so just removing it and blanking off the pipes may not work. Getting the whole manifold/carb set up second hand shouldn't be too difficult, even buying them new wouldn't be the end of the world

The flying saucer looking thing is an EGR valve according to the parts catalogue. Looking at the drawings, the exhaust manifold looks identical to the standard type except for an extra tapped hole. The later de-toxed inlet manifold is the same as the standard manifold. I reckon it would work O.K. with the ports blanked off, but like Davec says the de-toxed carb has a different part number, so it may have different sized jets. I'd just give it a go and see how well it works. If it's not right a standard Zenith carb will probably sort it out.

I live just up the road from you - Give us a shout if you want to go greenlaning sometime.

Where do you live may pop up and see you someday if thats ok

It is an EGR system.

Remove it completely. It will damage your engine in due course if you don't.

The carb should be just fine without that horrible thing on the engine.

Thanks mate will be removing this weekend.

Excellent plan.

Have a quick look at the inside of the inlet manifold just where the EGR port is connected. With any luck it will be quite clean as the petrol / air mix will wash it clean, and carry all the filth right into the cylinders ...

You might like to see the mess in Disco diesel manifolds because of EGR. It is absolutely full of GRUESOME black filth like Marmite. It becomes so bad eventually, that it gets to the stage of strangling the engine.

I have had mine blocked off with a plate since I got the car, but a couple of weeks ago I just ripped the whole thing out. Disco TD5 goes a lot sweeter without it, and a lot further on every gallon.

With any luck you will notice an improvement in all running respects.

Thanks mate i will have a look when i remove it. The fuel consumption is really quite bad on this Landrover the worst i have ever seen so hopefully when i remove the offending item i will be a bit better of in the fuel department..

I'd second that - EGRs are ****. I've done some work on my sister's 206 diesel, and the mess in the inlet manifold caused by the EGR system was terrible. There was a coating of sludge after only 70K miles about 3mm thick. I dread to think what state the cylinder head is in.

The IDEA was a THEORY that some smart arse had, that feeding exhaust gas into the cylinders in some circumstances would POSSIBLY cut down on the emissions of oxides of nitrogen, usually referred to as NOx. Now if you lived in Los Angeles on a smoggy day 20 or 30 years ago that would be a plan. But you don't.

They thought it would do this by reducing combustion temperatures in the cylinders. But HEY !!!! These are HEAT ENGINES!! They work by HEAT! The hotter it burns the better it works!

So the EGR replaces GOOD COLD FRESH AIR with nasty burnt exhaust gases. Good idea huh?

The EFFICIENCY (that's POWER and MILES PER GALLON to you and me) goes right down the pan. Remove the EGR and expect as much as 10% better MPG right away. My TD5 Disco went IMMEDIATELY from a steady 27 mpg to 32-32 mpg just by fitting a blanking plate to the EGR port on the exhaust manifold. Later I removed the whole damed thing.

So this stupid EGR device actually causes MORE pollution!

I won't go on. There is NO merit is leaving an EGR on any engine.

Removed the egr today and just aswell as it was full of this rock hard black gunk so it obviously wasnt doing its job. Big thanks has to go to John for helping me today and for adjusting my timing. Engine runs a lot smoother now and has a bit more go in it not much but better.:)
