What is so precious about a Throttle Position Sensor?

My 93 RRC LSE coded 17, which is the TPS code. I've cleared it and it's not popped up again. It got me looking at the price of a new one and it's $459 here!!

What is in that gizmo that makes it so expensive? Is it were the famous Lucas smoke is produced??

Well, if it thinks you're demanding full throttle when actually you're off the gas it would certainly concentrate the mind!

It needs to be pretty precise. You're probably right in that it does in fact contain copious amounts of Lucas smoke....
