what is it or does please

Discovery 300 tdi 1998 R REG
Can anyone please tell me what the black round plastic ring surrounding my ignition barrel is, its black plastic,fits snug over the ignition barrel behind the plastic cowling, around 4 inches in diameter, and has one electric plug connection coming off it.

It's an 'exciter' ring and used when the fob is in close proximity to it to remobilise your engine.

OK thanks for the replies, what if my key has not got any chips in it, its
a bog standard key, I have a 2 button fob, for door locks and alarm, but I am sure the key is just a solid plastic black with the chrome key sunk into it what would the '' exciter'' be exciting ? only its getting in the way of me getting the plastic cowling back on properly so was wondering if I could get shot of it

It reacts to the fob not the key.

Ah ok thanks it has to stay then, just have to get a bigger hammer to get the cowling back on then

ABS also has exciter rings.. thats more info to put in your pipe and smoke
