What is better td4 or TD4?

The Freelander 1 has the BMW TD4 engine, 2 litre capacity (very early ones had a Rover unit)
The Freelander 2 has a 2.2 litre TD4 engine which I think is a Ford unit.
 
Depends what you mean by better. The TD4 is is a 15 to 20 year newer design, the Freelander 2 was the first vehicle it was used in.It s certainly more powerful, smother and generally more refined.
 
According to the reviews the FL2 has a Peugeot-Citroen engine with more power and torque so i imagine feels more like the FL1 + Synergy....
 
TD4 is quicker,smoother, but i think it drinks more fuel, but it does seem no two fl2s perform quite the same, some are positively sluggish, yet others go like stink, fortunately mine is the latter, but it does cost me a small fortune in fuel.
 
Thanks for the replies. I have now heard peugeot and citroen mentioned and french and reliability don't sit well together so I'm going to wait and see how well the TD4 engines perform long term.

What has it come to when we have a french engine in a landrover?
 
It is a Ford-Peugeot engine (Citroen have been using Peugeot engines for years), they have been used in (then) Ford owned Land Rovers since they started dropping BMW engines around 2004, in particular the TDV6 used in Discoveries.

To be fair Howardo, Peugeot/Citreon have designed some pretty good diesels in their time.
 
Peugeot diesels are considered to be amongst the best makes.
In the old days the better diesels were for the big boys Mercedes and if one didn't bother about the noise also Perkins, for the smaller ones it was Peugeot the numero uno.
 
60K on a chipped BMW TD4 never missed a beat - the auxilliaries (aircon, alternator, etc) were damaged by a faulty belt tensioner. Suspension and drivetrain main warranty issues.
"BMW" 5 speed auto box seemed to have a very low first gear that made tricky offroading easier.
"Ford" 6 speed auto box first gear seems taller, haven't taken her off road much to test the ratio in anger.
8K on "Ford" TD4, so far so good.
Faster but uses similar fuel quantity.
The engine tows better but the suspension wallows more.
I think it's noiseier than the BMW unit in the cabin, but that may just be soundproofing differences.

When you say "BMW 5 speed auto box" are you referring to the JATCO automatic box fitted to Freelander 1 Td4s?

I have had all three Freelanders - a "Rover" diesel manual, "BMW" Diesel auto, and "Ford" diesel auto. Its the design influence I was refering to rather than where the parts actually come from.

You're in a good position then to say which one you personally liked the best. So, which one was it?
 
The first one chewed out clutches for fun, if you have ever done this on the driveway without a manual you will know why I sold it after 2.5 years and 90,000 miles. Never actually made it between services without attention, off roaded every month at pay and play sites - still it did convince me to buy another.:D
The "BMW" version still had a lot of warranty visits, but did take us through the Sahara and back, off roaded every couple of months, and several weekends. The best steering and suspension setup, a good drivers car that needs more power. 60,000 miles in 2.5 years.
New one, don't actually like the way it looks, steering feels remote, engine is fantastic.
Has only been off road once so far, door trim fell off, and fuel tank took a terrible beating. Have since fitted Mantec guards front and rear. I pass the dealer every day, it feels weird not calling in to book it in for repair, this might be unfair as I haven't had opportunity to knock seven bells out of it yet.
So to answer the question if it was under full Land Rover warranty then the 2006, "BMW" engined version would be my car of choice - unless I was towing the caravan on a regular basis then it's the new one. You couldn't give me a manual version of any, and I'm not joking, I bought a Skoda waiting for an auto diesel. If you don't off road then any would be suitable, but then why buy any Land Rover? it's my choice each to there own.:eek:
And before you tractor boys start - if you haven't taken it on a proper off road adventure then your bigger posers than any Freelander driver - rant over.:rolleyes:
