Hi all,
Have a Disco 1, fitted originally with a V8, but the previous owner fitted a Tdi "Wheezel", which i have found, is out of a Defender.
When i first got it, it seemed very good on fuel, and pulled OK, if that's possible:confused: But I was wondering if the reduction in fuel economy, and it's sluggishness, would be down to the Injectors being C**p.......

The Engine No. starts with 16L, which i'm told is a defender, but not sure if it's 2.5, or a 300 Tdi, as I didn't fit the engine, and cannot contact the guy to find out either.......

How do I tell the difference? And would fitting new 'jectors give me any noticeable improvements?

Thanks all.........
Nick.

pass on injectors causeing an econamy problem, you can get them tested at a good garage or they will be able to tell you where you can get them tested. or you could try adding a fuel injector aditive to your fule

check tyre pressure, air filter, fuel filter. have u serviced the running gear? are there any brakes sticking on? if it has a turbo have you cleaned the intercooler and pipes? is the egr valve faulty?

if it has an engine management system has there been a fault that is causeing the mixture to over fule. hope some of this helps

baz

The engine size is 2.5 l, what else do you need to know?
What other size could it be?

It will be a 200tdi or 300tdi, both 2.5 litre turbocharged engines. The 200tdi was the earlier of the two and looks like this. If it doesn't look like that you have the 300tdi.

Injectors can be expensive so before you start handing out loads of dosh, start changing/checking cheap things such as:

1. If it has a fuel sedimenter, take it off and clean it. - cost £0
2. Change the fuel filter - cost £6.28 for all three filters
3. Change the air filter - cost see no.2
4. Take off the turbo pipes and check the outside and inside for wear and delamination. - cost for replacements £20-40 depending on rubber or silicone.

There's a couple of things to be getting on with,

Good luck

Dave

Thanks for the tips Dave,
Had the intercooler pipe off the top of the intercooler, (Intercooler to inlet manifold) and it seems to be soaked in engine oil
Does this mean the turbo may of S**t itself?
Didn't have time to remove the bottom pipe, (turbo to intercooler) but would assume that's the same..........

As for the Fuel filters, it has been converted from a V8 to a 300Tdi, so would they have used all 3 filters as a standard Diesel would have? or would they just use the main filter and head assembly that is attached to the bulkhead, as that's the only ones i can see.........

The rubber hose that's most important to check is the elbow from the turbo to the straight metal intercooler pipe.

Re oil in the pipes, it is normal to have a certain amount.

Re fuel filters, on a TDi300 it has the normal bulkhead mounted one and a fuel sedimenter.

OK Dave will get the elbow pipe off in the morning and have a look........
if it's just soaked in oil, and not falling to pieces, is that ok? just worried that the intercooler may be bunged up with oil and stuff, as the oil that came out the top hose actually dripped out slowly when pointed at the ground.......

Cleaning out the intercooler is part of normal servicing so it might be a good idea to do it now, while you've got the hoses off.

It's an easy job, get the 'cooler out of the vehicle, fill with white spirit or similar, agitate, leave to soak, agitate again and drain.

Make sure it is really drive before you reinstall. Job done.:drum:

Good point.. will stick with the white spirit first, then a rinse through with thinners as it evaporates better. and any residual fumes will make the 'ol girl cough and fart, I bet!

It is best to ensure that the intercooler is totally free of anything that the engine could run on ie anything flammable. A mate of mine several years ago did a clean through job on a 525tdi BMW, put it all back together and on start up it pulled in all the flammable fluids he had cleaned it with and revved itself to destruction, it wasnt a pretty sight!!!!!
