What have you done to your Freelander today

I know little about these things but suggest to him that the safest thing we can do is get the regulator replaced as this can't fail on the customer again and has been intermittently working so we don't really know if it is properly fixed. He pooh poohs me, adjusts the regulator and hands the van back with a working flame.

The customer hadn't even left the yard and it had failed again!

So "know it all" then decides to change the regulator. I tell him that we should get a registered guy to fit it, but he knows best and changes it. It "should" be OK, but that's not really what you want is it!

Not with gas… no.
Best left well alone to a certified person (as much as I love DIY, at least I can see water leaking from a pipe)

Adjusting a regulator is a no, no.
I think the lesson here is don't take chances with gas, but then you already knew that. ;)
 
Two things that frighten the life out of me.
1. Gas.
2. Large rechargeable batteries.

I did used to do my own gas boiler work. Before elf and safety.... When buying parts they would ask if I was Corgi registered. I used to say "no but I have got a German Shepherd" and they would sell me the bits !!! Only simple part replacement, no adjustable stuff.
 
Had to grind off the drop links today 😁, still had knocking noise though.

Turned out the driver side, side step was very rusted and basically falling off. I never noticed because I don't use and just step right into the car. Had to also grind that off as well. Will need to take the other side off to even the car out!

When I did oil boilers, the regulations and training was pretty stringent, and this is just oil. The liability insurance used to a minimum of £1M coverage, but after a couple of accidents, it suddenly the insurance shot up to £10M, at which point paying the premium made repairs and servicing not financially viable for a sole trader, so I stopped doing it.

Batteries, I'm not bothered about.
 
Today apart from attempting to change the suspension bushes on No2 daughter's Aygo, I installed some B & W speakers in the front front doors of the FL2.

Comparing the factory midline speakers and the B & W side by side, there didn't didn't seem to be a huge difference. The magnets and baskets are the same, as are the voice coil dimensions. The cone of the B & W is stiffer, being a kevlar weave and suspension is softer compared to the factory plastic coned speaker.

It took about 20 minutes per side to swap the speakers over, but after I'd done the left side, I tested the sound to see if there was actually a difference between the old and new speakers. I was surprised to hear that there is a difference, the B & W sounding much cleaner, less muddy, but with a better lower end response (the subwoofer was turned all the way down for the test), and the volume where distortion starts is higher up on the volume scale. The original speakers started distorting at 20 on the scale, but the new ones don't start distorting until the scale gets to 32, so the system now goes considerably louder than before, while sounding better.

It's a shame the speaker grille doesn't show the speaker a bit better, as it sounds good enough to put the drivers on display.

I’ve been sitting and thinking about my “sound systems”… in my BMW, which has (in my opinion) quite a good quality sound, we’ll normally have a usb stick running with tonnes of favourite tunes from the 80’s… generally too loud, as we or I sing/shout along. Always love good tunes.
But in my FL1, I rarely, and I mean rarely, even turn the (original) stereo on. I just love driving it and listening to that ol’ diesel plod around the road/farm/track. I’m in my own little world in Freddie!

Wow!!!! Back in the day 11 was good but now you can turn it up to 32! That's almost three times more. 😋

Never had FB, don't want too. There's far too much trouble associated with FB.


I guess volume controls have evolved like cars. ;)

The bulbs can be accessed from behind the arch liner. Although I suspect that fog light bulbs last pretty much forever.
Unfortunately they've been NLA for several years, so prices on places like ebay have got high, which means they're more profitable to steal, especially as they almost fall off if given a gentle tug. I saw 2 teenagers pulling off a pair in daylight in Brighton, it took literally 20 seconds before they were running off laughing.
