What have you done to your Freelander today

Today, I've been trying out some bumper cleaning products. My grey plastic bumpers had gone nearly white (see in photos below). I want to try a few products before taking the "nuclear option" with one that contains a dye (the one that @andyfreelandy used looks very good!)

Previously I have used Autoglym "Bumper and Vinyl Care" which wasn't too difficult to appy, but came off with the first rain.

This week, boys 'n gals, McGuires "Ultimate Black" (circa 11 quid from Halfrauds, a couple of quid cheaper from Amazon):

Much harder to apply (I used a plastic brush to get the product evenly applied to the textured plastic), but the bumpers were still a nice dark grey colour despite overnight dampness :)

Will feed back...

Wing mirrors and scuttle are next on mine, either rattle can or heat gun seem to be the longest lasting options.
 
Today I found time to prepare a replacement bumper corner for painting. I keyed the previous Java Black paint, and sprayed on 3 coats of grey primer. This will need gentle flatting, before I can spray the Tonga Green base coat. Although I'm going to need to warm up my workshop, before I attempt to paint the clear coat.

I'll be using a rattle can. I'm not going to be getting the spray gun out and have a Ltr paint mixed, for what is essentially a 1ft square panel. Being a dark colour, it should come out just fine from the can. The trick is be careful with the base coat, and use plenty of clear coat to finish.

I've already painted a pair of fog lamp bezels (they were missing), and the paint looks factory fresh, out the can.

I'll take my time, and show off the results, once I'm happy with it. :)
 
Watch the cold with metallic paint. I did some silver once in the cold and it came out a completely different shade to the same paint used when warm!

As I needed the job doing I played a warm air gun on it as it dried and the colour changed to darker and correct !

I used Wurth black bumper dye - its expensive, and a faff of a thing to put on, but I've got over a year out of it with no visible signs of fading; if the McGuires stuff doesnt last it could be worth trying the Wurth.

Well today i've received the cup holders, minus the radiused piece of trim to go between the cup holders and the speedo head, so I've ordered one of them (FAH000020PMA) from advanced factors...

Fingers crossed they can get their hands on one of these trim bits.

Does it make a grey bumper black? Mine's a grey-bumper model, and ideally, I'd like to keep the bumpers the original shade. But if it keeps going white I'll go black! ;)

So far, the bumpers have stayed grey - and the same hue as they were when I treated them. Will be interesting to see how long this lasts!

Make sure to rub back the undercoat with 1200 grit or 1500 before top coat. Before the lacquer rub the top coat back with a nylon scrubber or similar. If you don't the lacquer will end up bad orange peel.

Yes Ali. The primer will get a flattening treatment with wet n dry, used wet.

I'll then wash off the base colour with a non stick pan scrubbing pad, again used wet, maybe up to 3 coats will be needed.

The lacquer will be sprayed in several heavy coats, and flattened with wet n dry, if needed. I'll then buff it to a high gloss with my power polisher. ;)
 
If you need to get the base coat I've found these guys very good. The colour match was perfect and the lacquer is pretty good too.

If you can use a spray gun with 2k lacquer it will be way better than any rattle can though. Last couple of times I sprayed Lacquer from a gun I used no thinner at all and it made the coverage much better than previous times. Only issue is the temp is so low at the minute for 2k to harden.

Only fitted an hour ago, barely tried them on tarmac but the ride is superb :D

They are, nominated the spare to be arranged to replace the left hand side for that reason.. hope that was the right (left) answer
