Hi All,

I know I'm in for a slagging, but be gentle!!!!

Just bought myself a 1992 110 200TDi(it's this blue one) and haven't a clue about the gears, when to use, high, Low, etc. Once you've finished slagging me off would someone explain when to use what!!!!!!!!!

Briefly as a general rule: High on road. Low off road. High if on very slippery surface like deep mud or ice/snow. Never floor it in 1st low as you can damage your drive train. Difflock in if traction is likely to be lost. Out if not.

If you're on loose ground (gravel etc.) and you need to put the diff lock on to get a grip, people suggest that you reverse a little / back off once you've taken the diff lock off to take the torque that it creates back out of the drive train. Low ratio will also use more fuel because you'll be revving higher to keep a bit of speed up. Saying that, I have had to use low ratio with my old 2.5 N/A on some very steep tarmac roads (private roads) from stood still because it just wont budge in high ratio.

Oh one other thing, you might find yourself in more trouble than you need to be when climbing in low ratio. Low first, second and third are that ridiculously low that changing between them on a very, very steep hill might have you rolling back down rather quickly! Make your gear changes as quick as possible in this case, or just set off in one that you are confident will get your landy moving, even if you need to slip the clutch just a little.

If you're having to slip the clutch, you're in the wrong gear. Pick the right gear for the obstacle, and stay in it. It may take you a bit longer, but you shouldn't be in a hurry anyway.
