I've had my Discovery for a few months now.

There's nothing wrong with the current exhaust except its too quiet and I want to hear the V8!

I'm not specifically after performance gains, just a sensible sound improvement. I've done a bit of research and am aware that TD5alive do a cat back system:

Alive Tuning - Real Land Rover Performance for TDi, TD4, TD5, TD6, TDV6, TDV8, TDCi, Puma

My brother's RR classic has a Janspeed system but I can't seem to find one of these for the 4.0?

I guess the other option is a custom made one such as from MIJ Exhausts MIJ Exhaust Systems Bespoke Stainless Steel Exhaust System guaranteed for life custom made exhaust system engine control unit remapping ECU remapping GTR GTS workshop based in Walsall West Midlands cheap exhaust system vehicle servicing

Should I consider removing the cats as well - I'm aware they're a legal requirement, but it should pass an MOT emissions test on LPG..

What I don't want to do is damage the way the engine runs - any advice would be welcome!

Thanks - Andrew

I'm assuming you have a d2 v8?
If so and you have gas then you can remove the cats and fit headman headers with lambda sensor boss's to keep the lambdas but if you have pre and post cat lambda sensor then you cannot remove the cats until you have swapped the ecu chipping the ecu will not gain anything unless you have improved the mechanical bhp first

The Alive system is a very high quality unit, and for the price it is really a no brainer.

Consider a set of performance metallic cats for the vehicle. They don't break like the OE ceramic ones and they certainly allow the vehicle to flow gasses out the back much better.

Double S do a cat set, and they come in 3 pieces so they are very easy to fit without moving cross-members etc...
