Morning guys.

My P38 2000 4.0 hse has had a bit of an intermittant EAS problem.

Sometimes it's fine and other times it sits at the access level and when I start the truck it flashes to try and get to normal mode. The bottom access light stays lit but the only other light on is the flashing 2nd-from-top normal light.

Now I've had issues with sensors on my older rangie but this was a bit of a mystery as I'd always had the christmas tree - sort of all or nothing.

I connected my laptop and EAS unlock lead but it came up with no faults. When I tried to manually change the height, all I could hear was a click either from the compressor or in that area. Off I went and borrowed a compressor and swapped them over - no difference.

A mate then mentioned about the door switches and making sure the doors were closed. He said about taking the switches out and either replacing them or cleaning them as he'd done on a disco. I knew that the doors had to be shut for the EAS to kick in, however upon further inspection, the passenger door handle was about 1 - 2 mm out. Door shut but handle slightly out. Pushed handle in - hey presto - EAS rose her up lovely.

Now, question is, is it worth replacing the door handles (drivers side is also slightly proud) and if changed, do they need to be reprogramed? Easy job? costly job?

Or do I just make sure the little buggers are closed properly everytime? :D

Cheers for the reply Datatek.

I had a look on there before posting and although helpful, I can't find anything about the way that the truck/EAS detects that the doors are open/closed i.e. where the switches/sensors are. I wanted to know if the sensors are replaceable or could be cleaned. Obviously if I want to change the locks then rangerovers.net has a very good step by step guide.

Google is not throwing anything up and from speaking to one or two people issues with the door handles seem quite common.

It's just micro switches in the door locks and yes they can be replaced. The EAS will not operate if it thinks any door is open.

The front handles usually sit proud as they wear due to the crappy construction materials used - I'd be surprised if they sat proud enough for the switch on the latch to think the door is open though.

Sounds like that door might need it's linkages adjusted!

Don't think the door handle position has any bearing on EAS it is the lock
being in clasped position that operates the switch.

Good point. Makes this even more odd then! perhaps the door wasn't shut properly and just pushing the handle closed it enough for the switch to operate?

Yep, there are always two clasp positions on door locks if the striker plate is not adjusted correctly the door can clasp on the first position that wil not activate the micro switch. That will only happen in second fully clasped position.

It has now happened a couple of times. Maybe a coincidence but have pushed the handles in securely (as mentioned above only a couple of mm) the EAS rose up. Both times the doors were definately shut.

I'll have play with cleaning the door mechanisms this weekend or do you chaps think I'm barking up the wrong tree?

Do you know where I can buy the switches (if needed) as a quick search on google doesn't seem to return anything?

The switch tells the BECM the door is closed. BECM removes the door open message and tells EAS ECU doors are closed, if you have no door open message then the EAS should work. Maybe as you say securely pushing the door handle in has shocked the switch into contact, but until that time you should have had a door open message.

Cheers Wammers and thanks for explaining it quite so simply - much appreciated!!!

The door open message has never been on (apart from when the doors are open) so maybe there is more to this. It's currently working ok so might be best to leave it until it becomes a more persistant issue.
