Hi guys

I'm new to this forum and looking for a bit of advice.

I have just bought a 2005 Freelander TD4 with 52000 miles.

After driving it for a while I have noticed that it when turning on full lock there is a rubbing sound. I can't work out where its coming from but its definitely a rotating part and it kinda sounds like ' whoa whoa whoa '

I have also noticed that after a short while of driving on the motorway I can hear a very faint high pitched squeak which seems to disappear when I apply the brakes.

Finally, the car keeps pulling to the left ( not very much and possibly just the tracking)

Any ideas what this could be? and any tips on locating the problem would be appreciated.

I had a rubbing noise on full lock on our 2005 Freelander - it was the vertical plastic inner wing where it clips into the engine undertray and the tyre would rub on it on full lock. Might not be in your case but worth checking.

Hi guys and thanks for the replies.

I drove 30 miles today and when I stopped I checked the VCU. It was warm but certainly not very hot.

I am not sure if the brakes are worn or not as im not sure what a worn disc looks like!

I did notice something interesting though - I looked behind the front wheels whilst parked with wheels turned to full lock and I noticed there is a rod on each side, roughly at the same height as the top of the wheel. These rods run through the middle of the car and are connected to each other.

One of them seems bent and constantly leaning back, whilst the other is straight. I have attached pictures to show.

This can't be normal? What are they and why is one bent?

First pic is straight one (photo11.jpg), second pic bent one (photo10.jpg)

Btw thanks for your quick replies this is a great forum

Thats your track rods ends either side and they are connected to your steering rack , check for play in the track rods ends by getting someone to wiggle the steering wheel while you look for play in the track rods ends . Also test your vcu by jacking up back wheel and turn wheel by hand , if theres some pressure behind it its ok but if your brake into a sweat turning it its time for a replacement before the ird is damaged or back diff , there is also another test you can do if you look it up on you tube

sometimes the power steering pump can be heard on full lock...is it this perhaps? check for play in your front driveshafts too as one of the CV joints might be making some comotion when taken to its extents while on full lock.

I took it back to the dealers today and they replaced the bent track rod end. Drove home and there's no difference in the way it drives, but now it looks like the other side track rod end is bent!!!

(they haven't swapped them around it's clearly a new part)

your track rod ends arnt bent they are on a ball so they can pivet when turning the wheel just a thought are the tyres standard size or wider as they could be rubbing on the inner arch!!! whent to my local roen 4x4 today and they had fitted wider tyres to a defender and they were catching put your steering on full lock and have a look;)
