It was a recent box wasn't it @Grrrrrr I reckon the shaft could be worn. Was it a recon or brand new, maybe the shaft is just out of tolerance?

Refurbed one from Ashcrofts 2 years ago. Never considered the shaft wearing around the seal. Guess it is possible. The seal I took out a few months back had no spring on the back so that one was definitely fitted incorrectly. The replacement seal I put on was Corteco. I figured I must have messed something up like maybe not quite getting the seal square in the hole. IIRC it was 3/8" below the lip.

Should be around 5 mm below lip. Unless someone has fitted it deeper to miss a groove in the output flange. I made a fitting tool. Unless someone has used the correct fitting tool the wrong way around. Front and rear oil seals have different intrusions.

You can get double lip seals in the same footprint for most sizes and quality varies massively between manufacturers.
On our machines we will only use james walker seals, yes, they're about 30% more expensive but on 300mm dia seals, they're the only ones that don't leak.

Good call. Wych Bearings might be worth a call too.

What year is it? Didn't think SRS came in until later? Isn't his a DT like mine? Could be all sorts of superfluous wires!
Supposed to be a Mar ‘95 DT same as yours??
But I do have a flashing SRS light, yellow cables, headlight washers/wipers etc????
Some DTs I’ve seen don’t have a hevac either just 3 turn knobs like a Defender

Ground down, rust treated and sprayed while the shock is out - no more rust on the awkward bit. Thank god it’s stays light til 10PM
New ones should be here tomorrow so il give 3rd coat of stone chip early morning with luck, then pop it in and start other side, may even be able to drive it this week!! :)

If I put my dash back together too, and unwired the hotstart properly, and the coolant level is okay, and the pedal works, and I don’t snap anything...
she’s a b**ch on times

That's what I thought. I've got airbags in mine for driver and passenger but no side restraints as far as I know. Don't have wipers on mine and didn't have fogs either until I upgraded it. Mine came with HEVAC although I've seen others with the 3 knobs (I'll leave the obvious joke out).

SRS driver/pass only too - they didn’t go off when it went over.
Ive got clear lights all round which obviously didn’t come from the factory as weren’t introduced for years later. so still bit of mystery.

@Datatek how is the alternator??
I just replaced the failed one with my spare, so all is good with the car. Harder to change on the left hooker as the steering box and pipes are in the way of it coming out. The duf alternator is sitting on the bench awaiting attention, too hot to do much at the moment 40C yesterday:eek:

New shocks fitted and chassis around them brightened up.
Hot start I found is still bit of enigma, but is working and I can actually drive again, for now - again. Considering I can drive a little in this extreme heat it must be better than before?

Feels like a completely different...boat... with the new shocks, back end gone up a bit too!

Shocks are obviously shot when put next to new, unstrapped they go way longer than the old
