Got my first p38 and I guess I will need a diagnostic thingy which is the best (and most reasonably priced) one I will want to read understand and clear fault codes
So what do you all recommend ?
 
I have a Nanocom and I find it dosent pick up all the faults or clear them
Sometimes especially on the gear box it will reboot itself and say that it cannot connect ECU.
I do find it handy for operating windows when the switch pack packs up but it will not tell you that the switches are at fault.
also it will not tell you that the in tank pump is not working.
I have cured a few faults with it. At the moment I have an EAS fault 35 mph showing on my instruments I know why but the Nanacom will not give any more information as to the fault .
Having said that i believe that it is probably the best apart from the faultmate.

I had a similar experience with the Nanocom. I popped over to see another forum member who has one to try and clear a fault stored on my HEVAC. Anyway, the Nanocom didn't seem to recognise my car, however he tried another unit, Bearmach? I think? and that worked fine.

Neither will anything else. You are not using it correctly.

Funny that, I've got the same issue with the Nanocom Evo. Mine only arrived last weekend so I haven't really had much time to play with it yet, but what I have found is that it's a bit erratic when it comes to talking to the ECU - some of the options work fine, some will occasionally lose the link to the ECU, and the EAS option doesn't seem to work at all (the screen just hangs, which means that I have to unplug the cable from the OBD socket).

I'm going to check whether or not I need to upgrade the firmware on the unit this weekend. Once I'm happy that it's all up-to-date, I'll check whether it gives me any further problems, then I'll drop an email off to Nanocom.
 
+1 for nanocom.

Some functions only work with ignition off. Others with ignition in position 2. Depends what you are going into. Had no issues with mine once I read what needs what. Easy to follow and cleared all stored faults I had. Even hevac.
 
My Nano works fine. The only issue I had was it wouldn't talk to the Cruise Control however once I sussed out it needed the switch on the dash in the on position all was ok. I have noticed it does sometimes need the engine switched off and sometimes switched on but I have never had it not read an ECU. Done lots of work on the suspension where it was excellent and using it on my engine I found the faulty LPG injector with the misfire counter. I can't vouch for other readers as I've never seen them but the Nano is very very good. They come up for sale on here from time to time that's how I got mine. One thing worth checking is if the firm wear is up to date. Dead is to do on the Blackbox site.
 
Nanocom

I have the faultmate MSV2 Extreme but it is linked to vin number so can only be used on one RR.

I got it cheap (150 still in the box with all cables receipt and documents - 50 euro to change von number) but if I were buying new I'd go for the nanocom
