I am wanting to flush my engine and put new coolant in sometime over the coming weeks.

Can you guys please advise me which one is best or most cost effective for the 4.0 P38 2000MY?

I have the workshop manual detailing how to do it so doesn't look complicated. All I need is an idea of quantities to buy so I have enough.:)

I am working nights from tonight until Sunday so won't be able to reply, but I await your responses

Thanks

i had the same dilema mesen a bt ago.

i was wonderin what the yellow type coolant was in me 38a, and am confident that its what the stealers use to keep us going back to them.

I have been using normal eth glycol stuff supplied by our local fuel firm, and have no probs so far. ( it can be blue or green) I am told that you can mix the 2 colours, but not to mix the red? some one better educated that me mite tell ye better.
my opinion is that an engine requires cooling, providing you use water (temporarily) or coolant there should be no problemos.

If you buy the official dealer coolant its the red stuff and you get the raw antifreeze/coolant in the bottle and then mix it 50/50 with water.

Ever since I have had my P38 I have always used the red stuff.

I'm back from my night shift. Thanks so far guys - keep em coming!! I know that the red stuff is mainly used in the Vauxhall diesel cars at work.

As the V8 is an aluminium engine, if the coolant should run low, would normal water suffice for the time being until it could be replaced. Would this cause any damage at all?

Also is there any particular brand I should be looking out for?

It would take just water on its own without coolant. BUT DONT DO IT. It is such a risk this time of year. Due to frost etc.Any coolant suitable for ali engines would do, buy a tester from the local car shop when you get your coolant it wont cost much and could save loads. I think mines got about 5 lts in it! If you havent got time and you just want to top up, chuck neat coolant in.

I always use a 50/50 mix of Bluecol and de-ionised water. If you live in a soft water area that should be o.k. Buy a 5 litre container as the system takes about 16 pints.
Totally agree
