been looking to buy a nice disco for a time now and one came up the other day so i bought it,98tdi low milage,tad of rust,dry inside and tight as they come well pleased,any way the thing i need to no is average fuel costs mpg,what can i expect, got a rough idea. ta doug

expect that you have taken the first step into a new hobby of fixing up landrovers :D start saving for tools and new bits to mod it now :) MPG is between 22-33 depending on what your doing and what your driving like..

111bhp @ 4000 rpm Power

195 lb ft @ 1800 rpm Torque

Turning circle is not great, great view of the road when driving..

To get the very best out of a Disco TDi 300 they need regular servicing - my advice? Don't believe what the seller told you. Start afresh by giving it a full service, as per the following:

1. New air, oil and fuel filters. A kit from Paddocks of all three costs £6.50+vat;

2. Replace engine oil - 10-40 semi synth, 7ltrs;

3. Replace gearbox oil - 3ltrs of MTF 94;

4. Replace transfer box oil (2.5ltrs); both diffs oil (1.7ltrs each. Total 6ltrs of EP80w-90 oil.

5. Replace engine coolant - 7ltrs of OAT coolant

6. Replace brake fluid - 2ltrs of Dot4 brake fluid.

7. Replace coolant thermostat - £4+vat at Paddocks

8. Check/Replace propshaft u/j's and rubber doughnut.

9 Check replace wheel bearings and swivel bearings.

Once you've done that lot she will run sweeter and better. Then if not already done, a couple of modifications:

De-EGR - £20

De-Cat - £20

The 2 mods will give you better performance and mpg.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

Dave

thanks got that list dave, as i was als wondering what servicing to do

is there a step by step guide on here for the egr and de cat ?? easy to do ?

Not that I know of, but they are very easy jobs.

De-EGR - buy the kit off ebay with the intercooler top hose, not just the plate.

De-Cat - Paddocks do a De-cat pipe for about £15+vat.

PS I notice that I haven't, as yet, received your apology?

cheers man, gonna get shopping next week and buy all the bits and service parts and fluids, new rear view mirror, maybe some wind deflecctors ? and a set of rubber mats

gonna ring round local yars n see if theres any breakers about

apology ? i dont recal what for ? but im not on here to have beef with anyone and just want to enjoy and talk discos and gain knowlege and info on my new hobby !

also...as im only a few days in to ownership, on a 150k disco...what sort of intervals should things be done from now on ?

forgive my ignorance but what is the de-egr,i no de-cat due to my bikes ,standerd mod

There is a anti-pollution system on lots of diesel engine called EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and was a poor cheap solution for the manufacturers to meet certain targets. Essentially the system, under specific circumstances, recirculates exhaust gases back into the inlet of the engine. Curious sytem when you considor that so much hot air is spoken about the absolute NEED TO HAVE a clean airfilter in place "never run the engine without an air filter". But the designers are quite happy to pump dirty sticky tar-laden exhaust gases directly back into the engine.

It's a crâp system and De-EGRing a vehicle is a way of junking this poor piece of plumbing to allow the engine to breath clean air only. Does not negatively affect mot results.

Then I will explain so you will be in no doubt.

In your previous thread you asked for advice about purchasing a TDi 300 and I wrote a clear response to you listing areas of concern and the likely repair costs. You then rubbished my reply saying how could I possibly know all that. Quite disrespectful actually.

Subsequent to that you organised for someone local to examine the car only to find that at least some of the problems I listed were apparent in the potential purchase.

So, to summarise, you asked for advice, I gave advice, you rubbished my advice. Then I was proved right.

That's why you owe me an apology.

To be honest Dougie it's a job too easy to need a "how to......"

Buy yourself a De-EGR kit inc the top hose off Ebay and you'll get instructions with it.

It's 2 bolts to undo, a couple a clips and that's about it.

To get the best from this mod clean out the intercooler at the same time.
