ok I bought my disco for pulling heavy things out of muddy fields.. but now I see the pics of you lot ****ing about in rivers and up mountains and I think I fancy a go at that... thing is I also like having bumpers and a tow bar and all the stuff you lot seem to strip off / out plus I do a lot of fast motorway driving so I don't fancy adding a load of weight or lifting the centre of gravity any more than it already is .. so I will go for better tyres (how good will depend on how much.. I'll read the tyre posts later on) but not really into doing any mods

so what can / can't my v8 discovery 1 with underslung lpg tanks do

I know I'm gonna get some silly answers and possibly some abuse but I need to ask cos I am determined to go play but don't want to trash her first time out cos I tried something you can only do with mods...

The answer to this is................

Really only limited by you ;)

They are an incredibly capable offroader even in standard trim and with towbar etc fitted ....... my first Disco had all the jubbins on it but still went most places others were going offroading and greenlaning ;)

A good set of AT or MT tyres will help considerably but the rest is down to you getting to know the cars limits ......... and thats all part of the fun my friend ;) :D

I'd never done any proper off-road driving myself before I bought my old Range Rover. I started off by hitting green lanes, byways, rights of way and seeing what it'd do.
Then I had a few trips to Salisbury Plain and the tank tracks....I would suggest you try and go out with another 4x4 before doing anything too ambitious. I was on my own and got stuck in deep mud ravine for 20 minutes! As it was getting dark....
As previously mentioned, a good set of chunky tyres will be worth their weight in gold!
My range was totally standard and road going. I got a set of Rally Dakar tyres after getting jammed in that muddy ravine though!

Join a club and do it with other people! Your local club will have "rtv" or "non-damaging" trials where you can test things out knowing that someone's checked the route AND can pull you out if need be. If you are feeling flush, buy a "Land Rover Experience" and specify the Defender. Judging by the tracks I saw when I did one on a Disco3 (quote: "we only do those in the Defender"), you will have a lot of fun in someone else's car. Your Disco will do almost anything a Defender can do, and you will probably pull out with horror before you reach its limits!

Oh no yer not... that camera is on me next door neighbours PC... and she's 70 :p

I wont go alone.. onest injun..

what about them tyres.. or does anyone know someone in / near Trowbridge that is cheap and does good big fat tyres....

You will find it cheaper to get the tyres of the internet and then get em fitted elsewhere. Have a chat with the boys at Bathwick tyres. They should do you a good price on fitting. Paddocks are quite cheap if you fancy Insa turbo's.

Tall tyres is good, fat tyres, there's a lot of mixed feelings about. If you've got 16" rims (which I'm guessing you have?) 235/85's will give you a good lift to your diffs and more importantly your LPG tanks! They would be my main concern & would limit me to fairly gentle Greenlaning. To which read this - http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f13/before-you-go-greenlaning-53235.html

A set of A/Ts (all terrain) as opposed to M/Ts (mud terrain) will cope with most situations while giving the best M/way & on road performance.

Don't go wading without at least fitting remote axle & gearbox breathers & a wading plug (if you've got one on yer V8, I int on mine!). You'd be surprised at how good a V8 is wading if your coil is fitted high up & your HT leads & dizzy are a good tight fit.

Get yourself some recovery points (though since almost any recovery can be backwards, a tow hitch will do), a couple of good strops and a couple of good quality shackles & you can go enjoy some lanes with others & without being a pain in the arse liability. ;)
