I have 2001 TD5 110 with a disconnected egr and 105k kms on thge clock. Its has been blowing a lot of black smoke lately. Power seems to be reduced. The vehicles has always been well looked after and regularly serviced.

Can this an injector problem? I first thought that it might be a MAF issue but disconnecting the MAF socket doesnt help.

Please help!!

It might still be the MAFF, when it fails the ECU reverts to a pre-set setting, or safe mode. Removing the MAFF won't tell you if it's failed or not. It needs to be plugged into a diagnostic computer to tell you if it's a dead un.

You could have an injector problem, but its more likely a collapsed intercooler hose restricting airflow.Check out ALL the flexible hoses on the inlet side - they delaminate and get sucked shut.
BTW Dan,disconnecting a TD5 airflow meter is a well known test for TD5's,as they fail they tend to give a low reading which restricts fuelling and hence engine output.Disconnecting it is the way to get the ecu to use the default values which will restore most of the lost performance.

I got it checked at a dealership and there were 6 stored faults..

which included ambient sensor fault, some thing related to maf, fuel pump drive fault, injector 3 load surge or something and a few others..

however the person doing the job said that all is okay and nothing is wrong.. these faults came and left and are not present and there is nothing wrong with MAF; your air filter is dirty and most faults stored are cause of that. So he replaced the filter and cleared the faults. Ran the motor for some time and
revved it too and none of them reappeared.

So I guess all is good? Let me know!
Cheers.

The lesson for today is "Always check the simple things first".
Glad you sorted it out. Next time it happens you'll know what to do. :)

Change your air filter.

Thanks shifty you've always been really helpful.

Although this is a drastic reduction in smoke but my car is still not as good as it used to be.

We have really bad fuel here with very high sulphur content. And as far as I know sulphur kills common rail injectors and I am sure it effects pumpe duse injectors too. So is there a way I can ensure that my injectors are good? Or any additive that might clean injectors.

I when drive my car really hard the engine note changes and it kinda sounds like a 300tdi... I have discussed these things before but it wasn't conclusive.

Sulphur in oil or fuel attacks any bronze components and causes them to erode over time. I'm not sure if there are any such components in the fuel system though. I'd run a litre of white spirit to every tank of fuel just to give the system a clean. It will dissolve any sediments or varnishes that may be in the fuel lines and injectors. Be prepared to change your fuel filter more often though as it also stirs up the ****e in the bottom of the tank.
The ****y fuel will always affect the performance but I have personal experience of TD5s running for 500k+ kms in Africa on just as bad fuel as what you get in Pakistan.
